New to this lorry driving malarkey. Got first agency job today for spar and they gave me a 2008 Scania class 2, 18ton. It was a manual but only had 6 gears. When fully loaded I’d pull away in first but sometimes the revs just dropped down… It would get to about 1000rpm then just drop, no matter how far I pushed the pedal down. Once I’d go into second it would be fine (has done it in second sometimes and had to go into third).
Another thing is there a device that stops you over revving it when pulling away? Whilst pulling away in second and releasing the handbrake I couldnt get the thing to rev. Felt like I was going to just stall it and roll backwards but if I released the clutch and handbrake it would just pull away normally… Weird sensation.
think with those clutch savers you have to start off in first gear EVERY time.as soon as you start moving stick it to 2nd (or higher) gear.should be a sticker somewhere saying as much

Not on the ones I’ve driven…does anybody actually use 1st these days? They are quite happy pulling away in 2nd or 3rd and to be honest, the only Scania rigids I’ve drove were Opticruise versions which you can just knock it up a couple. You can’t ride the clutch, no matter what ( reasonable) gear you pull away in, but then who takes it up to 1500rpm when still on the clutch? Also, didn’t know Scania still put a manual box on distribution vehicles…oh well, learnt summat today!

You do feel a wally when trying to drive these small litre engine lorries like you would something with 10 litres plus !
My boss of the time bought a whole batch of FL7 rigids for lorry and drag car transporting, bear in mind they tared off at around 18 tons, bought a whole new meaning to the word frustration, thankfully i didn’t get issued with one so only used one a few painful times.
Drunk fuel like nobody business cos you were always thrashing the living daylights out the things at maximum revs to keep them moving.
I later had an FL12 380 with the same lorry and drag set up issued to me, heavier but superb little lorry that that could get through some serious work and sipped fuel.
