Gaydon 2012

Easy solution Muckaway don`t look at the campers, I show a Mk1 Transit camper I restored I think a transit comes under commercials It combines showing a moter & having somewhere to kip I would like to find myself another van to show maybe the 400e or 5cwt 100e would you also get rid of these. These about all I can afford & have space to keep & gives me a hobby doing Steam & vintage Rallies.

I see Josh Herbert has repainted the Scania in the colours of his other moters

Whilst I can’t speak on behalf of the Steelboys as a whole I’d like to give my own reply to some of the gripes raised on here from the perspective of someone who is a member of the Steelboys and has taken a truck along for the weekend.

Firstly to Killsvilles point about us ‘getting around’ the shows’ 25 year rule. Since this rule came into force 3 years ago the Steelboys have been located outside the main show in an area next to the low loaders and camping. Therefore how can you accuse them of stopping any older lorries attending?

In fact the Steeboys area is outside of the paybooths so underlining that its not part of the main show.

I don’t see how the charity fundraising they do is a factor in them being there.

If you are unhappy about them not having space for you theres other places to look to point the finger.

As for the ‘running the show’ comment… I wonder if that could be elaborated on as the Steelboys only operate alongside the show and its the final destination of a three day event for us that takes a lot of hard work and planning to set up. If you are confused with the Retro show which takes place at the same venue in September then that IS mainly organised by Steel boys members.

I once again had a great weekend at Gaydon, and enjoyed seeing lots of good old trucks of varying ages.

I thoroughly agree with Neil.Gaydon was an excellent show once again. We had a great few hours there today in lovely warm sunshine. As for the Steelboys they have some nice vehicles which I always find interesting.
Keep it up the Steelboys I am always pleased to see you and your vehicles.
Cheers Dave.

Myself and a friend visited the show today, I loved seeing all the differant lorries on display of all ages and am very impressed with the amount of time, money and bloody hard work that people put into restoring the trucks, keeping them tidy and getting them to and from events like this one.

Regarding the Steel boys, they have a great selection of vehicles on display and we are always made very welcome in their camp by some lovely people who put a hell of a lot of effort into doing what they do.

They deserve all the success they get but it seems once again that with success sadly there also comes a certain amount of jealousy.

Brilliant show, well done to all involved,
regards,
Rowland.

That’s right I choose not to. Nor do I visit petrol can, farming implement and tractor seat exhibitors. Nothing personal it just doesn’t intetest me.

Totally agree with the above –

I don’t know if the poster who nearly got turned away with “his prize winning Atkinson” had booked a place or had just turned up?

Less than 25 years old (taken 11pm on Sat. night) ----

Def. a classic -

Or is it just the “foreign” motors than people are objecting to?

My first time at this show and me and my family had a great time the wife even enjoyed it and she hates truckfest I tought the show was laid out very well with some great commercials on show I think it’s good to have all sizes off commercials vans as well like some one said we can’t all afford the big stuff and don’t have the room as for the steel boys I think there is a place for them as well they put just as much time effort and money into restoring what are future classics. After getting fed up with truckfest and enjoying the classics more this is the show for me so will definitely be back next year and hopefully take my erf
Some very nice models on show as well and to a very high standard GREAT SHOW

Is the foden not parked outside the main show area on the hardstanding where the tenders and steel boys park? if so it wont be part of the main show.

looks like there was some some nice tackle there.

Who are the Steelboys?

Is it a West African band? there was an exotic singer / dancer there last year!

Cracking show, like anything it has become a victim of it’s own success and even outgrown Gaydon. The grass on the top of the bank still had standing water on top so none of that space could be utilised. One thing I have noticed in recent years is the number of restored trailers coming to the shows with Tractor Units/drawbars, and not always with living quarters attached. A lot of people spend as much time ‘checking them out’ as they do with tractor units but they take up more space than just a tractor unit. Not a complaint by the way, they do a brilliant job of finishing the motors off!

Hi had great day today as missed it last year due to weather only one complaint time where does it go at gaydon [what its never 3oclock] met loads of people new and old looking forward to retro what date is it cheers ian

The owner of the Atkinson had submitted his entry close to the deadline but it was in on time. He was refused saying the show was full and had reached the maximum number of trucks. The other Atkinson had been granted entry. As far as we were aware, the 25 year rule was in force then. It was only through a friend of a friend contacting the organisers, that entry was gained. But imagine our dismay when we arrived at Gaydon to find the Steelboys and many of the more modern trucks taking pride of place in front of the museum, many of which, at the time, were nowhere near the 25 year limit.

I am not knocking the Steelboys vehicles or the work that they do. My gripe was with the organisers. If they are setting criteria for exhibits, they should stick to them.

The 25 year old rule came in for the 2010 show, this is what prompted the Steelboys move out of the main area for that year.

Myself, my 2 young boys, and my dad went to Gaydon today, and we all thouroughly enjoyed ourselves. None of us gave a badgers wanger what age the wagons were, we loved the lot of em!!..the boys even wanted to look around the support wagons

Thank you to the couple with the St Johns Ambulance driven by a gorilla for letting my boys have a clamber inside, and thanks to the jolly chap with the ERF in the steelboys enclosure for letting them sit in the cab and blast the horn.

Now my gripe…why do these places insist on fleecing the visitors who wish to eat out!? After last years experience with the cafe, we all decided to picnic this year. And before anyone suggests the outside tents that were selling burgers etc, sorry…they were hardly competitive themselves, with asking for daft money for a burger and coke. Maybe I’m getting tight in mi old age, but come on, pirice up fairly. What with fuel and admission fees, people have spent enough as it is just getting there without being held to ransom for a bite to eat too!
Rant over

Gentlemen , good evening, whilst you have been enjoying yourselves, well some of us have been having to work!! Please do not let what is obviously a great couple of days be spoiled by petty gripes and ,(hidden), jealousies! Gaydon sounds like a great show, but remember it is being run for commercial gain, and having some little experience of these things, it sounds as though it more than washes its face!
Just because you cannot get your vehicle accepted, (be it “show winner”, or rougher example), does not entitle you to “lay about” the other vehicles on show, and claim that their presence should be removed in favour of your own. That is just b… selfish, and egotistical. Each and every vehicle is some ones prized and cherished possesion, whether, or whatever it actually is, and should not be beraited as such, this is a broad church, and something we should all celebrate, because, believe me our industry needs all the support it can get from the general public.
I enjoy the images put up on this site, even if the vehicles depicted do not “ring my bell”. We have a broad range of ages as contributors, from the younger, “10 spotlight, and air brushed graphics”, to us “more mature” (b… old), two shades of blue, or green, and “post office red”, and gold leaf brigade.
Some of us like US Iron, others the Scandanavian dueo, some hate it, some like “static” shows, with row upon row, of “transport cafe” parking displays, others like the “emerging classics”, some, something older. It would be a wise man who said which was best. Perhaps it would be more enjoyable to just peruse the displayed vehicles, and enjoy what is on show, and let the memories, and nostalgia flow!!
It aint the vehicles, it is the people that are the really important element of any “show”, be they vehicle owners, drivers, restorers, model makers, or show visitors. They range of experience, and knowledge is incredible, but you have to speak to each other to understand this!!!1 It is something to share, enjoy, and enrich ones self.
Others enjoy the cameraderie of group activity, why “knock” the steelboys, is it, (and it seems to me to be), jealousy. It is a shared enjoyment, and experience in something we enjoy, there is nothing wrong in that, and who knows what personal sacrifices have been made to own, and run, (in todays world running anything), is not cheap, such beautiful vehicles.
When I came in tonight to "diesel up ", the assorted tractors for tommorows work, looking across the barn I could see my LB76, sitting on the trailer, strapped down, as I had intended to take her to Gaydon, behind my Deere, (as she had come from France), but as ever the Farm comes first. Yes \I am sad, I wanted to put faces to names that I have “met”, on this electronic equipment, but there is always next year!! But please Gentlemen, please do not become as petty as our “friends”, in the classic car movement!
Well, this old boy is away to a roast chicken dinner, a nicely chilled bottle of Bollinger, and I hope that you all had a good day, Cheerio for now.

I went to Gaydon on Sunday. This was the first time I have been and I was impressed. Thought there was a good mic of trucks there the erf contingent had a few late trucks in the main area but overall I thought there was a good mix and something to intrest everyone.
I quite liked looking at the vans and campers as well as the big stuff also realy enjoyed the museum and we done the land rover experince which was good.
Compared to truckfest I thought it was good value for money and I fount it a lot more friendly than truckfest.
