Gaydon 2012

Welcome to the
Classic & Vintage Commericial Show

9th & 10th June 2012
Doors open at 10am
Please note the Heritage Motor Centre is an all weather venue and the show will not be cancelled.

If you are a commercial vehicle enthusiast then this, the largest classic commercial show in Europe, is the major show of the year for you!

This year’s display vehicles are all pre 1987, providing a colourful step back in time for all the family. As a two day show, about two thirds of the display vehicles, including over 50 lorries from the ‘Steel Boys’ arrive by the Saturday afternoon and the remainder arrive early on the Sunday morning. So to ensure you see all there is on offer a two day ticket is ideal, if you can only make one day then the Sunday is your best option to see all of the vehicles.

Sponsor this years Classic & Vintage Commerical Show We are proud to announce Kelsey Publishing back as sponsors again this year. They have their own trade stand showcasing their publications, alongside an additional 60+ trade stands outside and 10+ inside. All the trade stands are all commercial vehicle and transport related, so you should find those transport gems

Can anyone tell me are there any meeting points on route to Gaydon this year , if am correct didnt a few meet at greesey joes cirencester in the past ?

I think the Steelboys have stoped there in the past.

Hi John,
The last group of the 54 lorries on the steelboys run will leave cirencester football club by 11a.m. On saturday morning.travelling up the fosse way down fish hill and through broadway,we all then have a scheduled/staggered break at the travis perkins branch on Evesham industrial estate.after that the groups head up the a46 through stratford-on-avon for lunch at Volvo in wedgnock lane Warwick, then down the m40 to gaydon.
Regards Andrew.

I’ll be out on the route somewhere with my camera, catching the Steelboys in all their glory!!!

If anyone that is going be at Gaydon this weekend could take some photos of any F86s that may be there as I cant make it that would be great
Cab shots round the tilt handle and inside the door area would help me a lot thanks Phil

This year’s display vehicles are all pre 1987,

Unless you’re with the Steelboys, then you can bring whatever you want!

As you can tell, I have a bit of a gripe - me and my friends were almost turned away a few years ago with two show winning Atkinsons, hence why you don’t see them at Gaydon anymore!

i asked this question the other day about the 25 year thing and was told the steel boys get in through the back door due to charity work is this right?
i know 1 or 2 this has upset in our area, folk that have shown in the past!..it’s the same the country over these day’s rules only apply when it fits with those in power!!!
mind with some of the comments on here anyone would think the steelboys run the show!!!

It’s not just the Steelboys that get around the 25yr thing: I’ve seen several Foden Alphas at Gaydon plus a MAN (thinly) disguised as an ERF. Personally I’d like it to be 10 years age limit as I like '90s kit but wont waste money on Truckfest.
It looks like I wont be able to make it to Gaydon as the wife wants to see her brother in a cycle race in the Cotswolds…I’d rather stay at home and observe paint drying.

I went up yesterday and there was no 86’s there, I’m sorry to say…

Interesting comments!

As I say, I went up yesterday and didn’t see the steel boys but thoroughly enjoyed the rest of the show. The weather was kind and it was good to catch up with some old friends. During one or two conversations, much the same sort of thing was said then…

Any way… if anyone is going today, you will enjoy it. There is some lovely lorries there (over 25 or not… ) Best for me was a lovely little D-series with what looked like a custom built car-carrying body on it. It was absolutely immaculate and very pretty… Neil Bartletts fleet always look good and I’ve always got a soft spot for any ERF’s - there was a dozen or so of those to drool over, so I was happy

Great pictures George -

We paid a flying visit last night - the McGovern fleet have to be one of my favourites:

With respect to the Steelboys - personally I like this era of vehicles and I welcome them at shows of this nature -

If I had to make room at Gaydon I would lose the tractors, campers and any smaller van-derived commercials first -

Next against the wall would be any vehicle that has obvious “camperisation” – i.e. tractor units with plastic boxes on the fifth wheel -

Agree with “lose the vans/campers”; Never even bothered with those at any show. Since when were campers “commercials”?
Nice to see CVC handing out comics again…

Campers are based on Light Commercials and as such along with Light Vans are part of the Commercial scene how many rally’s do you go to that does’nt have a mix of vehicles thats what makes rallys have something for everyone to enjoy. Eddie,

The commercial vehicles I want to see are the ones I didnt drive, the pre 60 lorries, almost all of the photos on this page are of modern vehicles. I will allow the F88 and mcgoverns Leylands in.

Remember most lorries were light commercials capable of carrying 5cwt

And there in lies the problem – we all want something different -

Personally, very little pre 1960 interests me at all - Certainly things like Parrot Nose Dodges or Bedford O types don’t really grab me that much -!

The Steelboys wagons aren’t down on the actual showground. They are outside the pay booths by the side of the park for the lowloaders etc. They also raise a lot of money for charity with their runs to the various shows.
Cheers Dave.

It is a commercial show - not a general vintage/classic show though.

Either way – these two looked great!

Whilst I can’t speak on behalf of the Steelboys as a whole I’d like to give my own reply to some of the gripes raised on here from the perspective of someone who is a member of the Steelboys and has taken a truck along for the weekend.

Firstly to Killsvilles point about us ‘getting around’ the shows’ 25 year rule. Since this rule came into force 3 years ago the Steelboys have been located outside the main show in an area next to the low loaders and camping. Therefore how can you accuse them of stopping any older lorries attending?

In fact the Steeboys area is outside of the paybooths so underlining that its not part of the main show.

I don’t see how the charity fundraising they do is a factor in them being there.

If you are unhappy about them not having space for you theres other places to look to point the finger.

As for the ‘running the show’ comment… I wonder if that could be elaborated on as the Steelboys only operate alongside the show and its the final destination of a three day event for us that takes a lot of hard work and planning to set up. If you are confused with the Retro show which takes place at the same venue in September then that IS mainly organised by Steel boys members.

I once again had a great weekend at Gaydon, and enjoyed seeing lots of good old trucks of varying ages.

I find the lowloader section really interesting; Great selection of semi retired motors in there.
I agree with Fryske about the real vintage stuff; Kit based around Model T Fords etc and military gear don’t hold my attention, save a Mighty Antar perhaps.
