Gas Lamps in London

Bit of Trivia for you-

I was just watching BBC News/Travel Show & there’s still 1500 Gas Lamps in London.
They’ve got 4 Mantles, a pilot light & a wind up clock (since 1865 & still working) with a lever that switches the gas on for the light at night. They’re maintained/Clock wound up every 14 days.

I never knew that !

Wonder how many Steam Driven Lorries are still in service ?

Sewer gas

Apart from Westminster , gas out the house of lords

I believe that Malvern still has gas lamps as well? I remember the old lamplighters going around town with their ladders when I was a kid, and the councils water cart washing the main A329, A4 and other roads in Reading every night to keep the streets clean. I must be getting old…

Pete.

WOW!!! I’m surprised there’s still gas lamps in use, but is nice to see our history!!! Gas lamps and gas lighting in London, England, UK

When I hear gas lamps I tend to think of this song and Jack The Ripper. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lriWlHZAy8A
