Garrowby Hill

Well that was exciting this morning. Full load of tates and my poor old 15 year old Volvo just ran out of gears. Couldn’t keep her going as she doesn’t change as smooth as she used to. Dead stop, halfway up, 6am, dark and wet icy. road. Dumped air, crawler gear, long old job to the top. Wouldn’t go that way again.

What Volvo unit is it ?

that’s a hill to pick a gear at the bottom and stay in it! 2nd low in a 14 speed 420 scania at 44t will do it

Now you tell me :0)

480 FH12

480 FH12

So overtaken by a Yorkshire farmer in a JCB fastrak with a full load then ?

That’s a proper hill to test a wagon.

I remember that hill as a kid.

My dad always had clapped out cars and it was always a celebration when we got to the top!!

Don’t try Sutton Bank then :open_mouth:

Biking up it isn’t much fun either!! Spewed my guts up when i got to the top!!

Bet it’s fun going down though. Legs sticking out, going wheeeeee

Hi

My first experience of Garrowby Hill was with a B series ERF with a 180Percy and a DB6speed. 20t of Dolomite for Huggate Quarry. I staggered over the top. but only just, if it had been 50 yards longer it would have been head scratching time!
Lesson learnt ,went Wetwang way after that.

yeah but it aint weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee coming out is it :grimacing: :grimacing:

I’m off to Driffield tomorrow, not looking forward to coming over this hill, it will only be the second time I’ve done the climb…last time I was carrying 26 tonne of animal feed and the truck almost ran out of steam half way up, fingers crossed it won’t be wet either :frowning:

Done it many a time had a few hairy moments, as said earlier get a Gear at bottom and stick to it if u stay out of the tramlines you get better traction look on road surface for where wagons have spun out and worn road surface smooth. If in doubt go down a1079 to shiptonthorpe roundabout and turn eft adds about 10 minutes on but safer in wet

Local to me, taken double deck fridge trailers up and down it quite a lot with 420 MANs, usually overtaking the ponces in the cars on the way down as Reed Boardall used to do the haulage for Sara Lee at Bridlington and we’d run the stock to Boroughbridge.

The hill is fine, the problem is that people don’t climb it properly. They go hell for leather at the bottom and then they’re fighting through the gears instead of slowing down and selecting a gear they know that the truck will make it up in.

If you don’t want to do Garrowby then going A1079 and then A614 only adds 5 miles or so.

Thanks for the advice. The last time it was going into the unknown, I just left the truck in auto and fell into the trap of trying to gain momentum at the bottom of the hill, must admit my backside was chewing my underpants at times!

i live in village at bottom of garrowby, many a truck gets stuck on there, there was a stobs there earlier this week…

a couple of years ago a bulker got stuck about 3 parts of the way up, not a major problem till he tried turning it round :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth: ended up with a couple of tractors and chains holding the trailer from rolling over… may still have the pics on my old laptop if i do will put them on here…

Thankfully my run got changed and I had to go to howden first, so came up the A614 to Driffield instead.

The first time i met that hill i didnt make it. It was an icy morning in the middle of December, wasn’t expecting it to be as bad as it was. I got to the middle and ran out of steam (auto 420 scania at 44t) but luckily it was about 5am with no traffic which gave me space to reverse back to a spot that was a bit more level to get going again.
