Hi all.
I passed my class 2 around a month ago and am looking at gaining experience and contacts within the industry. I don’t need to drive for a living at the moment as I work full time as a HGV mechanic but I do want to find out more about the industry from on the road experience.
As I have said I’ve got my class 2 and have had a PSV for 5 years. I am also about to start training for my class 1.
If there are any haulage companies or owner drivers out there in the Leicestershire area willing to give me the odd day driving or just some time riding shotgun then please get in touch, I’m not expecting to earn any money I just want to gain some experience which may pay off for me later in life.
Thanks.

Just the fella I’m looking for! I’ve decided to become a HGV mechanic and I’m willing to work for 30 lashes a day and some hard tack. Know where I can get a start?
What’s wrong with your firm getting you started?
Nothing at all, I have done a few days driving for them.
If you’re prepared to do a proper driver out of work by offering to work for nothing you’re probably not worth employing imo
Fair enough, no wonder the haulage industry gets a bad name

Do you mean because drivers don’t particularly like the idea of people doing other drivers out of a job by working for nothing, or because some drivers may be daft enough to work for nothing ?
Either way I think you’ll find it’s the same in most if not all industries, people working for nothing so someone else can go without a days wages is never going to be popular.
I just want to learn more about the industry, not trying to do anyone out of a full time job. As I have said I don’t need to drive for a living. It’s hardly suprising not many young people are coming through if this is how welcome they are made.
you have much more chance when you get your class1.
and although you have no experience in the driving side, you know your way round an engine. and i’m sure you can change a bulb or a fuse, which is a lot more than a lot of the ■■■■■■■■■ that are already in the job pretending to be super truckers.
as a mechanic, i’m guessing you don’t work for a haulage company.
look for the small family firms in your area, and do some foreigners. the driving will follow, even if it starts out just running up and down from the test centre.

but if you do “an odd days driving” for free you are probably doing an agency driver out of a days work !

It’s generally accepted on these forums that if you’re prepared to work a day or two for nothing to gain experience the best option is to go out with another driver, even if you do the driving and the usual driver sits in the passenger seat at least no-ones losing a days work in these troubled times.
Sorry if my posts offended you Dan, I’d be the last person to want to make you feel unwelcome but if you stop and think about it I’m sure you’ll agree that there are better options than depriving someone of a days wages
The above is what I was asking for in the post, sorry if it came across differantly.
