Fuel Saving Device - Is it BS?

I saw a link to this on an American forum. smarttrucksystems.com/undertray.php They claim 10% savings for it and it would cost around £1500 fitted in the UK.

Does anyone think that it would actually work?

If it was true - how long would it take to pay for itself?

Love it !!!
Also add nub jockeys who wedge there car sideways under your bumper

Seen this being used by a couple of companies for 2 to 3 years, that come in our yard here in Canada, both largish companies but only a couple of their trl’s have them so I presume it doesn’t work too well, also one of these companies has been trying out a new system whereas there is a pair of false doors at the back of the trl that look like they are left open when on the move, I suspect it’s something to do with drag.

Would stand more chance of working in the US where lorries still travel at 80mph and turbulence becomes a real issue.

Not going to make a scrap of difference in the UK where we average about 25mph over a working day as our distances between junctions/jams/problems/towns is minimal and getting shorter every day.

Very true.

Montracon offer an underchassis spoiler in the UK.

The area under the trailer is very ‘dirty’ aerodynamically, so anything you could do would help.

But, it will really only start to make a difference above 30 mph: at speeds less than that factors like rolling resistance are more important.

The EU is looking at changing length regs to allow those trailer ‘boat tails’.

The best fuel saving device is competent driver. Than proper vehicle maintenance.

Best fuel saving device is planners with geography knowledge !

Or put it another way, when they run you one end of the country to the other to do collections other vehicles have passed,or hundreds of miles with one pallet, any fuel saving a driver could make is out of the window !

prob same as trailer side skirts . they work well in a wind tunnel but not enough to offset the extra fuel used to pull the extra weight .

The best fuel saving device is just to leave the truck parked up…

lol, a wedge under the trailer being pulled by a truck with the aerodynamics of a brick. dump the wedge, replace the kenworth with a modern-engined volvo and turn the claimed 10% savings into real 30+%.
