Does anyone know roughly what the fuel consumption is for a lorry ticking over for say ten hrs to keep air con running ? I know it differs from truck to truck ! Just curious to know what an average would be .
I know it’s a fair bit being left of idle, as our boss said turn engine off if you know your not going anywhere soon. he did tell us how much our DAF’s use on tickover p/h but i forget.
Why cant they combine a night heater with an air-con unit
0 mpg.
sorry couldn’t resist
IIRC its something like around 3 to 4 litres an hour, but don’t quote me.
i was going to post a picture of the page handed out to me recently by DHL…but cant work out how to post pics?
it states that idling costs around 2% on feul consumption…says…on average this can be £1200 per vehicle per year!
and also produces 3500kg of C02.
The computer on my Renault Premium shows that the fuel useage is 0.4 gallons per hour at idle, so for 10 hours on tick over your looking at around 4 gallons or just over 18 litres. At todays prices thats around £16.20. So the boss isn’t going to be too pleased

and wonder how much that goes up when the renault premium’s compressor kicks in when your sitting idle
It’s the drivers who may be asleep in there trucks next you that i feel sorry for as it makes such a loud “whoosing” noise when it kicks in
I’m sure I remember the poster on our wall saying it was on average two litres an hour on idle. There was an article about it in one of the mags last month sometime, might have been CM, talking about retrofitting night heaters to save on fuel from drivers running the engine to keep warm. Not that that will help with the air-con though.

I don’t know and what’s more, I don’t care. It was 116 degrees when I was last in Spain and I am not going to sit in a steel and glass box sweating my knackers off for the sake of a few litres of diesel.

Here here, used to do it years back, trying to sleep during the day in Italy in summer , because you had to run at night cause the ban was lifted between midnight and 7 in the morning.

Too right…
Back in 2002 my night heater packed up in Florence and when i told the gaffer, he said tough… Thats fine said i, just left the engine running as and when required to keep warm, which in January was quite often!!
Would have no hesitation doing it again if neds be, Smmer or Winter!
I seem to remember the on board computer warned us that the the engine used 2 litres per hour, hence the reason for buying the in cab coolers that ran off the batteries on the new trucks.
found this
On tick-over, a typical heavy-duty truck engine
consumes fuel at the rate of around 2 litres per hour.
That equates to roughly £1.70 and over 5 kg of CO2
emissions per hour.

I don’t understand how less than 2 kilos of fuel can produce 5 kilos of CO2
IIRC the law has recently been changed in America to stop drivers idling their engines excessively.
Its damned annoying anywhere when you’re trying to get to sleep.
Edit: here’s an interesting read:

Or why it matteres how much CO2 anything puts out…

Because to burn 2 kilos of fuel the engine pulled-in 10s of kilos of air, 1/5th of which was oxygen. 3/4 of the mass of the CO2 is oxygen.
But who cares.

I am with you, without trucks, diesel engines and spaceships there would be no CO2 and therefore no photosynthesis to assist the trees and plants to get big and strong
Now sit down and eat your veg
ever noticed how well trees grow by the motorway

Thats interesting (in a geeky way)
So 2Q ask’s
When the combined Co2 (from atmosphere::fuel)
has exit’ed the engine/combustion process,
When measuring the total Co2 emision ( with lttle probe, up engines bottom (cant say a*s))
How the hell do they calulate which part is attibuted to the injested atmosphere or fuel consumed,
when there NOT measuring either the ingested air, or fuel’s, Quantity or composition.
answer is:; they dont, the Co2 emission just has to fall into a standard range they set.
Just another (clever) way to increase taxation, while also passifying the Green’ys
As for saving the planet…
Well 2Q he say:; The Planet will be here, A long time after we all posion ourselfs to death.
Just as the Fish Tank and its contents will still be there,
after all the Fish have died out due to over crowding…
