fta inspection

The fta is coming to my work next week. What can I expect?

What powers do they have?

They spend about 3/4 hour mainly checking safety items such as brakes, tyres, steering and general condition. They fill in a checklist and go through any problems with the transport manager, if they found a serious fault which would get a GV9 they would inform you but have no actual powers.

Its just the truck? Do they do tachos and defect sheets too?

They do have people that check the tacho’s but they operate separately, again they have no actual powers. The vehicle check is purely mechanical.

Why  Are you worried about it.

FTA? Nothing to worry about there

If it was VOSA it might be another story…

I guess if the boss has asked them or allowed them to come and inspect the site, fleet driver whatever, it can only be a good thing.

From what i understand the FTA are on the side of hauliers/drivers.

They dont have any real power other than you or I do, if they found the firm to be shockingly bad or something they ‘could’ inform VOSA or HMRC.

 It’s a ‘belts and braces’ thing by your employer.

They pay a fee for a qualified engineer from the Freight Transport Association to come at certain intervals to ‘audit’ the standard of maintainance on their fleet.
They’re making sure that the garage are doing exactly what they should be (and your firm is paying out for) and not missing faults like fluid leaks underneath, loose bolts, chafed pipes etc.
They spend a couple of hours on a really, really thorough inspection of the vehicle(s) and then get your manager to show them maintainance records, repair invoices, etc to make sure everything is as it should be to conform with the operator licence requirements.

I’d say you’re with a ■■■■ good employer there, Dapper, and the inspection is certainly nothing for you personally to worry about.

lol I’m a natural born worrier. I’m the kind of person who will drive 10 minutes back to the house because I think I’ve left the door unlocked. Which I never have. But I’m conviced one day I will.
