Frozen Chips -20

I used to bring frozen chips back from Belgium and the bloke I worked for used to tell me to turn the fridge off at night to save diesel, after 8 or 9 hours of being turned off, the box temperature was still -9 to -10, and it wouldn’t even begin to thaw out until it rose to zero.

When I worked on the dock and a reefer never got plugged in on the boat, we had to inform the customer, and there response was always " don’t worry , on a 12hr crossing its only likely that the air temp has dropped not the product / core temp" so if that’s 12hrs and your on a 9 off. ■■■■ it

I once dropped my trailer then moved a few feet in front to get better sleep, set to -22 when I nodded off & woke up set to +13 & I freaked out, I had frozen chicken fingers etc for Iceland & I was tipping it in an hour. Turned it back down & played dumb, they accepted it…

I find it amazing that your average fridge trailer has no way of stopping some no gooder from altering the temperature, let’s face if it’s on -25 and on constant then someone puts it right up to it’s max but still on constant you ain’t gonna bat an eyelid are you especially if you’re in bed.

The thing that got me was that not many members of the public know how to work a fridge trailer so it must have been a knowledgable someone, maybe even one of us, I’d never do that to a fellow driver.

A disgruntled driver or someone with a nasty streak. I did have mine turned off once but it only had a pallet of returns on anyway but the temp didn’t go up much.

Maybe, I wish the control panel could be secured somehow…

Ok, I’ve started a fridge park…two more beside me, both on stop start … Sleep will be stop start as well I expect … :-/ I knew I should have packed them ear plugs …:frowning:(

Knock it up to -29 and just before you hit the sack knock it off,in this climate it won’t defrost.

That’s far from correct!

Can you expand on that ?

The important thing here is the core temperature of the load. If it’s allowed to rise above acceptable limits, probably -18 in this case, it isn’t easy to correct that just by setting the temperature lower, virtually impossible. The temperature read out on the trailer panel is not the core temperature of the load, just the temperature of the air surrounding it.

For 2 1/2 years, I was doing frozen and parked at the Stockyard for 3 nights a week. Just used to set temp to max when I pulled in. Switched it off by 10 PM. Left at 6 AM, air temp was about -6 to -8, fire up outside Stockyard and would be -20 by the time I got to the motorway

I wouldn’t have chill on continuous this time of year as outside temp could be similar to fridge temp and stop/start might not kick in too much.

i cant sleep unless the fridge is on !!!

i,d be suprised if the core temp would change much, the crux of it is if the delivery point wants a temp print out, most of the places i deliver to judge the temp on how much dry ice fog comes out of the back of the trailer

It’s frozen though makes no odds whether the temp is -18 or -25 it’s still frozen and not thawed out.
Why would any customer be ■■■■■■ off if their chips were a bit more unlikely to thaw out to what it said on the box.
And another point if it was McCains and he loaded them out of Wolverhampton then the time it takes them bone idle waste of space tossers in the cold store to load it they probably would of thawed out anyway.

Do what you want Taff…

Thanks I will…

Switch it off and don’t shop for chips at the store you’re tipping at for the next few months!

They are deep fried anyway kills all the bad germs!! :grimacing:

Draw a chalk outline around the control panel and tell them the Rozzers did it so you can’t touch it !!

Exactly that, it’s only the box temperature that drops, and even then it’s still -8 in the morning and it’s back down to -20 within 15 minutes of starting the fridge motor, if you probe the goods then they won’t have changed temperature at all.
