From the dole to

Well good evening everyone,

Went for my interview this morning and got the job, but it doesn’t start till September the 1st. On Tuesday I will find out if another company I applied are happy with my references and have done all the checks on me they need to and if they are I have got that job. Also I have always had a back up plan that starts the 10th of August doing a night run.

So here is my problem will call the companies A, B and C

A is a family run company which is the type of company I would like to work for. After a good chat with them this morning I really really want to go and work for them they are going to put me straight onto a class 2 doing a local multi drop run for a pallet distribution company. Not my ideal work but would suite me as I can get there on the bus and can get myself back on my feet and sort out getting another car. Here is the best thing though nothing was promised but class 1 training was mentioned and it went along the lines they like to train within. Also there is a good chance that if a position becomes available on general and I wanted it I could move onto it meaning more hours, better money and distance work which is what I want. I really liked the impression that I got from both him and his wife they seam like they could be very good to work for. On leaving I did say if you need me in between now and the start date I am available and to just give me a call to which he replied you may get a call next week.

B is a large company, doing air freight which sounds like it could be interesting. If everything is okay with my references etc I could start there on Friday but they are going to start me off on a 7.5 which doesn’t bother me. There are a few good points about this job but also a few bad ones but the main thing to me is it starts on Friday and I really want to get back out to work.

C is doing a night run into the land rover from Elmdon Ind Estate which is about 5 mins away from the Land Rover, this is my least favourite option but it starts on the 10th of August and have always had this as a sort of back up plan and is a class 2 job.

So I think you can tell from the above where I want to be working, but its a month before it starts dont know weather to hold out for it or what but in my opinion it holds the best future for me and could see myself being happy working there and staying there for a long time the money isnt great but I dont think the other two are exactly brilliant to be honest either but there is the chance of going onto general where the more hours would mean more money. This job aint all about money for me though as long as I can pay my bills have a decent car, a decent home and be able to treat my kids every now and then I am happy. Hopefully I will get a call next week and he will be able to give me the odd days here and there then it is problem solved.

So what would you lot do?

You’ve answered your own question. Go with option A. You obviously want it and it would be foolish to let go of a job that you really want just because it isn’t instant. It may be worth the wait. Good luck whichever you choose - nice to have a choice!

Being able to have a choice has shocked me think I have been very lucky and have been at the right place at the right time

well done , you have a choice of three jobs. I think you know which one you want to work for, so If the money isnt great between any of them , askyorself where would you be happiest working(if your looking at pernament work it will make a difference) also askyorself what other opportunites are on offer( you know that already),A says possably may call you next week-would they consider staring you sooner<img%20src=“{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_idea.gif”%20alt=“”%20title=“Idea”%20/>

Well I know which one I would go for I have worked jobs that have payed the bills and have been totally miserable looking at long term they offer the best for you so its the old addage (do you want one piece of chocolate now or wait for an hour and have the whole bar!!!) think about it  I think you have already made your desision but you said to them call me if you need me between now and then and he said you may get a call next week so you may start before sept and in which case u dont need to make the choice good luck mate whatever you choose I wish you all the best

ps I want adisclaimer if you take my advice and its the wrong choice this is just my opinion and I could be wrong

All the jobs are permanent direct, none agency to be honest I have been thinking about it all afternoon and I am going to hold out for A and hope I get a phone call sooner to start but we will see. The money is not great but you have to take into account I wont be starting till around 8 in the morning and going home at around 5 most days, but if or when I get onto general and the hours go up, maybe a few nights out as well the money would be good.

Thanks for the above replies sort of helped me make up my mind properly, what’s that guiness advert lol

So my next question if B says yes how do I tell B & C that I dont want the job without burning bridges, you never know when you will be knocking the same door again or meeting the same people down the line?

Big Brummie Macca:
how do I tell B & C that I dont want the job without burning bridges?

Tell them A phoned first.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

Phone up b & c and thank them for there offer of employment, Maybe tell them that a friend has been let down by a driver and needed you to drive for him but your not sure if it will be on a permanant basis so please could they keep your cv on file,

That way it keeps your options open

Well done Macca, Looks like were both on a winning streak!

total madness:

Yep I think a!
But i have been mistaken in the past and even wrong on the odd occasion
Go with your gut feeling mate and you wont go far wrong

nice one mate chuffed for you . A . sounds good to me .

Well if it turns out to be the wrong decision we can only learn from it,

Roll on September and get to spend an extra couple of weeks with the kids while they aint at school so waiting isnt all bad

I would offer my tuppence however…

Jennie:
do you want one piece of chocolate now or wait for an hour and have the whole bar!!!

I now cant remember what I was going to right!

Point and case…now if they were jaffa cakes drools

If I read things correctly, there’s a job that starts next week and another that starts in September. The answer is simple, start the job next week and if you don’t like it,leave and start the other one in September.

take whatever job comes first, if job takes a while to materailise then you gaining experiance from another company. when A offer you a start just tell them you have to give your current job a weeks notice and they will respect that.

I take both your points but at the same time I don’t want to mess people about, I dont think a company would think to much of me if I went to work for them for three weeks and then leave like I said in my above posts I don’t want to burn any bridges so what I am going to do is if B offer me the job I will say I have already accepted another job offer but doesn’t start till September but I could help them out until they find a full time driver. They may say [zb] off but they might not.

I have already said yes to A and will be going to work there hopefully it will be sooner than September but I am going to phone them next week just to say again I’m available if you need me even one days work a week is better than a week on the dole so I would still just sign off and not to go to that god forsaken hole of a job centre.

That was an ‘interesting’ new auto-censor dodge, but the reason that you had to separate the letters is your clue that the word isn’t allowed. dd.

With all these job offers Macca I think we should start an agency!!
Think of the profits
especially with all these offers from people wanting to work for free :open_mouth:

I think you are exactly right about not burning bridges… As the years go by it shocks me as to how many people i bump into that i either worked for or worked with and at the end of the day you can never have enough contacts,

What goes around comes around and all that,
Good luck with whatever you decide
