From step one training, or med/provisional alone

Hi guys,

Having rang around for some quotes on HGV training, I’m wondering how many people out there signed up for the all in one package offered by some training provides where you go down and they fill out the provisional forms, sort the medical etc. Against personally sorting the medical out, applying provisional then having the option to try a few training providers for assessment drives.

Any personal experiences on the pro’s and con’s would be great

Thanks

Theese all in one packages are probably through an agent. Your better off finding out where your local training school is and see them face to face, see what kit they have and see what they’re like. Have an assessment drive see if the training will be 1 on 1 or shared and go from there. I would stay away from Internet deals etc theres probably someone taking a nice bit off commission from you. Good luck.

As Karl86 said, stay away from brokers. But some trainers, us included, offer the full package although we’re not brokers. Certainly you want to visit the trainer before you book, have a look at the kit etc but dont be swayed just by price. There’s a guy on here who passed first time - but his instructor was dozing off, the truck was 10 years old and the yard wasn’t marked for the reversing and was rough. But it was cheap. Most folk would benefit from not having these hurdles presented to them.

You will find you can get cheap medicals - there’s a sticky at the top of this forum - so there’s no reason not to do your own medical and sort out your licence if you feel you are happy doing that.

But, as above, please visit the trainers and have assessments before parting with money. The only exception should be booking on rock solid recommendation.

Any decent trainer will be happy to help you through the whole procedure.

All the best, Pete

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE
dont go near the brokers , some people have been able to do their training and not had too many problems , but put in brokers in the search and read the posts that come up , more people have bad experiences ,

For just a little bit of legwork ie going and seeing the vehs and trainers talking to the companies , a lot will give you a free assesment to see how much training you need , you will benefit far more ,

if you go through a broker you dont get to choose your school or trainer , and I promise you that getting along with the trainer is a must ,

if you say where you are based people will recommend places near you that you can visit , dont just visit one either go to a few then make a decision based in being informed , your going to spend a lot of money getting your hgv licences ,

Would you buy a car just because someone said it was good or would you test drive it first and look it over

Im talking from experience here too !!! Brokers=== :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp:

Do not go with a broker.Over priced and useless :imp:

Being a complete idiot and not researching properly and falling for the old "there’s not enough drivers crap"i went with a broker.
I start my training tomorrow at 8am in maidstone which is a hour and half drive from eastbourne, not really ideal, but it’s the closest school that they use for me
I have no idea what there trucks are like,i haven’t spoken to anyone there, don’t know what there yard is like.No idea.Just told to be there at 8am.
Shame i didn’t research properly, wish i had found this forum before i did anything. But what is done is done,i will give it my best shot and hopefully come away with a past.

Good luck with it all

Hi guys, I’m in Warrington and have tried 3/4 in my area now. The general thing the trainers are saying to me is they prefer to do the provisional forms etc because of the number of people that get it wrong. I’ve got the D forms next to me and it seems pretty simple stuff :unamused:

Prices I’ve got so far for Cat C vary from 950-1450, townandcountrylgv.co.uk is the next one to call tomorrow.

Goodluck with your training Clark

Hi Curtis,

You may find that a read of this topic might help you answer your question:

There are some very helpful comments in that topic, and the OP is somewhere near Warrington.

Curtis i am from Warrington Padgate, let me know as well if you found some good instructor.

I used the training school I went with, to gain the provisional licence, purely because their medical cost £55 and my GP charges £105, sent all the forms etc off. I didnt actually decide to do my training until about a year later, but within that time I went and done my theory test, then went on to do my training about 6 months later…
