Anyone listening to Jeremy vine?As expected people criticising us lorry drivers.
Although saying that, it is a shame that there are a few out there that give us a bad name.
My thoughts are with those involved and their families. That twitter post from that girl Jessica…

Another Daily Vitriol reader has blamed the first lorry driver for stopping on the motorway.
Malcolm Beacham, from Woolavington in Somerset was named as the 6th person, although the last unnamed one is also said to be a Samworth Driver.
Leicestershire-based food producer Samworth Brothers confirmed that two of its staff were among the seven people who died in the 34-vehicle pile-up on the motorway in Somerset on Friday night.
Company director Mark Samworth said: "The thoughts of everyone at Samworth Brothers are with the families and friends of all these individuals and others involved in this terrible incident.
Never before have I had to turn up to work, and ask if there were any dead. I’ve been doing a lot of work for Wisemans at J24, and the J25-J25 is where about 75% of our trunking runs go through. It was horrific to watch the footage and try to work out if there were any wagons there from companies I work for.
I’m still stunned by all this.
LETS ALL THINK ABOUT GOING SLOWER ,

Same in the comment sections on all the newspaper websites. Fact of the matter is, the inconvienient truth is that there are a lot of idiots in our proffesion who drive like prats, giving us all a bad name. We all know car drivers are just as guilty and probably more, but they aren’t responsible for up to 44 tonnes and when we crash it tends to be a lot more devestating.
This is the cruise control generation… its a great function and 99% of us use it but not quite so many responsibly. A lot of drivers seem to prioritise keeping cruise control set over maintaining a safe stopping distance because actually using the pedals is so much of a chore.

What a load of rubbish if I get too close I either (a) overtake or (b) pull back and maintain a safe distance, I don’t tail gate anyone.

Swans that mistake the motorway as a river, and land. Are you for [zb] real??
Unfortunately he’s telling the truth. I’ve been to numerous swan jobs where they’ve landed on the motorway thinking it’s a river. Sadly a lot of them have already been killed by the time we get there.
Saw one on the southbound M6 where it joins the toll road a few months ago. Strolling about the carriageway and a full closure had been put in place. Size of those things could do some serious damage to a driver if they went through a windscreen.
And you can’t even eat them! a bit like Ginsters really

I was more referring to the fact that at half past 8 on a dark foggy night, it was highly unlikely to have been caused by Swans mistaking the motorway for a river as they probably would`nt be able to see it in the first place if you catch my drift . And yes I know it can happen, (saw it on Police Stop on the TV)
Condolences to all the People involved and Families who have lost loved ones.

that was my point he went into a ramble about swans ,donkeys and how you drown when your body shuts down when you inhale smoke in graffic details. no relavence to the thread at all

Hiya…i was going south on the M5 about 5 years ago…I was just by the Gordino services
southbound off slip and was in one hell of a hold up after about a mile you could see a rugby
match going on the left hand side…After passing the rugby game everyone sped off…
Surely if you need to watch rugby go to a game not watch it as you pass a field by the motorway.
I did hear on the radio that lorries was going to fast…just a moment 85K’s there’s no knowing how
fast the cars was going…i feel very sorry for all involved in the accident and others affected
but there are to many distractions for drivers nowadays…kids would look through the windows at one
time but now they play with games…maybe they could have warned their driver the traffic had stopped.
Now my pet hate cruise control i know it cuts out when you brake but that could be a split second to
much engine power against braking energy

I think that’s spot on. I used to be the same till I grew up and saw the error of my ways.

That’s so sad, he could have been a Samworth driver maybe.Truck driver Terry Brice, 55, from Bedminster, Bristol, was named locally last night as another victim of the tragedy. His 16-year-old daughter, Jessica, took to Twitter to pay an emotional tribute to her father.
She wrote: ‘Rest in peace, Daddy, I love you so much. You will never be forgotten, not a day will go by where I won’t hope you’ll walk through that door. Instead of mourning your death, I’ll celebrate your life. Wish you would hold me one last time.’
Another Samworth driver said there were 3 drivers from the same company killed or injured

There was also a J B Wheaton & Sons Ltd fridge involved
That’s really ironic (jessicas dad)–revman
That twitter comment from ‘Jessica’ brought a tear to even my eye it also brings in to perspective how sad you lot are in the face of such a tragedy you are still managing to sound like a bunch of school kids arguing in the playground.
RIP to all who have been affected by this tragedy.
Simon.

This shows how safe the motorways really are:
In our prayers and in our thoughts, our deepest condolences and sympathies to the families and freinds of the deseased, and all those who were injured and who just happened to be there during that devastating time

with regards to limiters, do you really feel like youre being safer being limited to 56? you cant pull yourself out of a jacknife (unless youre travelling at about 50), and really dpes the stopping distance between travelling at 56 and 70 really make stuff all of a difference when sh-t goes wrong? usually when a truck is in trouble like that, its gonna be bad regardlessYou think you can pull yourself out of a jackknife at 50-56? Yr a better driver than I could ever hope to be.
Absolutely, having jackknifed a truck myself, I can tell Beattun that a truck will jackknife quicker than you can say the word “jackknife”.
Having also jackknifed a truck at 50 odd mph I whole heartedly concur. All you can do is hang on and ride it out it happens that fast.
I think beattun’s comment is about as realistic as those who say they don’t wear a seatbelt so they can jump out of the seat and into the bunk in the event of an accident.
Yeah ! agree about the Jacknife business, even at around 20mph I couldnt pull out of it, though i was at a T junction, and remained the right side of the giveway line. Sacrificed the N/S rear of the Cab rather than anyone else.
And as for seatbelts, well about 10-12 year ago, a Driver got throne out of an ERF during an accident at Gate 29 of the M25, straight over the crash railings onto the A127 below. And no he didnt get up and walk away. thats when I started wearing the seat belt.

This is exactly the problem.
Far too much concentration on speed and total ignorance of the main problem, poor general driving standards.
For this you need police, not speed cameras
