I wonder if that petition makes any sense… Britain cant make any law that will apply to FOREIGN registered lorries as to what they should have fitted and what not…
You are of course correct. So lets start counting what Britain can’t do due to its EU membership. Thats one.
BTW i think Fresnel lenses are great and they should be compulsory for every lorry. Mine is a god send . The circular refelctions can be confusing sometimes though, once i was about to take off at some traffic lights, i glanced at my fresnel and i couldn’t make out if it was a yellow car along side me or a giant banana !!! To late, whilst i was registering the info i hit the car in front up the bumper !!
Mike, that has nothing to do with EU. It’s in Vienna convention on Road Traffic. Sorry to disapoint you.
As for Fresnel lenses itself, I agre with you that they might be very useful. I just think that this petition is pointless.
The blame should be on the all the truck makers, the truck should not leave the factory until a lens is fitted, but something better than the plastic ones that full off when when you want the window down in the Summer.
Could the reflective properties be built inside the glass if that makes sense??

Mike, actually, you got me thinking, I added it to what toby just said and actually (I am so sorry for that) EU can come handy on this one.
Britain cannot do anything to force foreign lorries to have something fitted (unless it will quit Vienna Convention, but then, it will be in really deep problem when going abroad due to having steering wheel on the wrong side), but there could be petition made to EU to make fresnel lense a standard feature for trucks - just as they did with extra mirrors.

I was toungue in cheek about the EU. But it should be a no brainer, all trucks should have them. Doesn’t matter what side the cab you sit on or what side of the road you drive on. With all the multi lanes we have everywhere now there’s often stuff in the blind spot . SO yeah, i’m all for them.

Me too. It’s just this petition is meaningless for the reasons I mentioned, we should make petition to EU to make it compulsory for all trucks - just as they did with mirrors.
Then if they would have to be fitted permanently, maybe truck manufacturers will get over the problem of them being damaged by lowering the window - they could, for example, cut them in the window glass itself… Or mount them on special bracked in front of the window, so they will work even if the window is open…

One down side of these is that if you stand outside the cab and look at it you can see the contents of the cab, very handy for the opportunist thief.
i had one in a few of my left hookers, handy for GB, and i also have one in the motor i drive now, R.H.D Volvo, handy for when i go into London (bicycles, pedestrians etc) they do look a bit gay thou.

Curtain should fix that problem…
As long as you remember to do it everytime you park.

You are surprised? According to common wisedom of Trucknet with some exceptions - like pictures posted in that thread - side sweeps is purely Eastern European thing So if you think that fitting one is helpful for you, it means that you can’t drive up to superior British Standards

When I had one in a Volvo I couldn’t get on with it, I felt the vision was restricted enough from the side window on the FH but more than that the flashing images (white lines etc.) in the corner of my vision was a distraction I could do without.
In a left ■■■■■■ in this country it may be a different story.

tbh mate, they do irritate you when you first put them in, but after a week or 2, you dont notice the white lines etc, they just take a bit of getting used to. They really ■■■■■■ me off when i first used them, (in a left ■■■■■■) but as i said you get used to them and they are worth using.
i witnessed an accident about two years ago on the A3 near leatherhead surrey,a foreign hgv driver sideswiped a VWgolf and if it had not been for other car drivers forcing him to stop he would have carried on hoping to get to dover and get back to his own country,i would sign the petition as i am a hgv driver myself but i do not wish to put my address down, sorry
I’ve got one in my lorry and now dont feel comfortable without it, its really useful not just for lane changes but reversing in tight places, pulling out of junctions if you cant see up the road etc.
