French indicating while overtaking

This may be more suited to the Euro boys.

Just come back from a weeks holiday in Brittany, and I’ve been to France before a few times but never noticed…

But why do French drivers leave their indicator on when overtaking?

We tend to indicate, commence the manoeuvre, then turn it off. (Mirror, signal, manoeuvre.)

Ken.

just letting the car in front who is overtakingthe car on the inside lane that they want to get past when they can

As a rule the French are quite good at indicating. Iirc it’s an offence not to over there and you will get fined if caught not indicating. You tend to find the ones who don’t indicate are arrogant Brits or some of Frances influx of immigrants.

I was always told it was a requirement in law over there, but I might of been given duff information

I would have thought they are indicating an overtaking manouvre during the whole process of overtaking. You may also have noticed that almost all European rigs give a flash to the
over taking vehicle when clear to come in,except at night when it can mean lets pull in the next parking for hanky panky. All fairly civilised in France these days can be a real
pleasure trundling around on their excellent road network,I certainly enjoy it.

Thanks guys.

What was very apparent, was the fact that the French roads are far superior to ours, even their D routes.

And we are supposed to be the 4th richest nation on earth? It was like coming back to a 3rd world country when I got off at Plymouth last night.

Makes you feel proud to be British…

Well, Ken they would be better than ours, thanks to the peage.  Compared to our suspension friendly roads (not) the French are like billiard tables. But, yes, you’re right the road network, in my mind at least, is far superior to ours with frequent rest stops, msa’s that’ll fit a new tyre for you etc etc

I think it’s just something that gradually became common to differentiate a single overtaking manouvre from one in which you want to let any traffic behind know that you’re continuing the manouvre to pass more than one vehicle before returning to lane 1.Or in other words it’s a way of letting anyone approaching from behind in lane 2 or 3 know that you’re not lane hogging and you’ll return to lane 2 or 1 as soon as you’ve completed a multiple overtaking manouvre. :bulb:

Another thing the French do is, when at a roundabout that they want to go straight over, they indicate right, until they get to the exit they want (straight on) then they indicate left to turn off roundabout. The good thing about doing this in UK is that it does stop cars overtaking on the roundabout, as they think ‘bloody foreigner dont know where hes going, i will back off a bit’.

Fixed that.

Unlike here they do it to make sure that traffic waiting at any point knows for sure which exit you intend to use.

.

If they are overtaking more than one vehicle, they tend to keep the indicator on then move back to the n/s lane sharpish.
Unlike the ■■■■■ over here, that seem to be continually overtaking fresh air.

Oh… Once upon a time I also did the roundabout in France wrong way… I learned some few words and gestures :grimacing: :grimacing: :grimacing:

The french are that good at indicating that they leave them on… For about 15 miles after they’ve overtaken

I think its a good system personally although its abit odd at first. What i dont get is when you see brits over there they fly about thinking their exempt from the speed limits then as soon as you get off the boot they start ■■■■■■■ about taking a bloody life time to overtake!!!

Me to, bit exciting.

Fair play to the frogs they don’t put up with slow s— driving they get a three inches behind you then leave their indicator on to let you know they want to pass, and it works !!!

Where as in the uk we just sit behind the old gits and moan!

Nuff said…   :open_mouth:

I think you mean we indicate left until just before the required exit then indicate right. This method is taught when you learn to drive HGVs and if you didn’t do it you would fail your test.

If people in this country were to drive in the correct lane, overtake quickly and not ■■■■ about sitting at 53.5mph in the slow lane or 65mph in the fast lane then there wouldnt be any need to build these 4 lane motorways in this country! And the 70mph speed limit in this country is a joke!
