Euro:
Sympathy to drivers caught up in this problem. I hope that everyonr gets home for Christmas. I suppose that the French did the right thing in the face of evidence about new covid. Maybe we should have acted more promptly in our earlier responses. Borders will always be problematic unless unions like the ones we used to have are agreed.
The French said from the word Go that they intended to close the border for 48 hours. What is closing a border for 48 hours going to do against Covid? It’s got nothing to do with controlling a virus, the intention from the outset was to ensure that eastern European drivers couldn’t get home for Christmas. Presumably they imagined that these drivers would blame the UK for the situation.
France did absolutely the right thing, acted swiftly and decisively.
They gave us notice of 48 hrs, they needed to assess the situation, the new strain of the virus and decide what to do next.
Other countries, not only in the EU, but all over the world followed, included the Trump o land.
If ghe US were our neighbour, they would be shutting the border no doubt about it.
I wish this country and the rest of the world acted as fast when the virus was spreading out of China, but this country’s leaders were as usual asleep behind the wheel much longer than other country 's leaders were.

Brexiteers- ‘we just want to control our borders’
French Government- closes border
Brexiteers- ‘DISGUSTING behaviour by french, they shouldn’t be able to close their borders. They need to be stopped, cheese eating surrender monkeys. Have they forgotten who single handedly saved them in WW2’
I by no means support Brexit or oppose it…
However there is a big difference in “Controlling boarders from mass unwanted/potentially illegal immigration”
and “Closing borders from your own citizens” in some kind of polititcal/media stunt.
If it wasn’t that, they would have a quarantine period placed on them on that side of the channel. Just like people could still holiday from countries to the UK in the summer, but had to quarantine on arrival.
Why cant they have been allowed to cross and then held in a area on that side until tested or what ever hoops they wanted them to jump through…Because its political.

We are an island…we never didn’t have control of our borders, geographically not possible, despite what Nigel ‘King of Media Stunts’ Farage will have us believe.
How many illegals have crossed this year who we cant simply return them to the continent. They end up staying here costing us thousands to shelter and feed until we either grant them asylum or return them back…that can take years believe me.
If they end up breaking the law they then end up in the prison system where they can sit for years before been accepted by their own nation…that takes years…believe me.
When they do land and end up in temporary accommodation (hotels, disused military barracks/cruise ships) that’s all at our expense and why? because we cannot simply just turn them around back to where they set off from. That is not control of our borders. Do i think Brexit is going to change that…No… But we certainly don’t have control of our borders…island nation or not. Brexit or No Brexit.
Geographically not possible is correct we should have perfect control of it but we don’t…morally and because of our softy softy roll over and take it nation, we even send boats out to rescue them and ensure they land safely when they get in trouble crossing illegally.
Of course, and what you see and read in the media should be taken with a pinch of salt, nor is the problem confined to our shores, and is a problem throughout Europe. We are the last stop for them and i get a lot more will end up stopping on their routes to wherever they feel they want to setup their new lives. Does it make it right…no. Sadly they are fleeing something or seeking a better life for themselves and who are we to deny any human that…But when it is at our expense making our lives more difficult… well i’m sorry but that doesn’t sit well with me.
Anyway we slightly digressed there onto immigration.

France behaved in the petty and vindictive way for which they are renowned, condemning thousands of ordinary working people- truck drivers- to a miserable Christmas Day sat by the roadside when they had been away from their families for several months and desperately wanted to be with their families, and they did this purely because French fishermen, who regularly hold the Port of Calais to ransom, couldn’t get their way with fishing quotas. It has nothing to do with Covid.
The Polish driver who I share my truck with - I do days, he does nights- and who himself has had to abandon his plan to spend Christmas back home described the French as “scum” yesterday and I think pretty much every eastern European driver thinks the same.

Yes and we have to forever live next door to petty and vindictive people who have shown they can shut down the country any time they want.
Does it feel like we’ve taken back control to you right now?
Calling people scum isn’t going to achieve very much really
It’s a well known fact the French hate us,.always have always will.
What did me with them was about 10 years ago, some French scrote pondlife daubed a slogan on a war cemetery in Normandy I think it was …‘Rosbeefs take your rubbish home’
A disgraceful comment under the circumstances of why those guys were there.
As a kid I befriended this old guy who fought in the First World War, a nicer most inoffensive old guy you could wish to meet…he hated the French.
I remember him telling me quite a few times…‘‘We preferred the Germans to the French,.and we were fighting them’’.
I just used to tolerate them all the times I was over there, some were fine, but others…

There’s a big difference between a country controlling its borders in order to sustain its population at a level consistent with its infrastructure and to disbar entrants with a known history of theft or violence, and closing a border purely in order to prevent eastern European truck drivers from getting home at Christmas to make a political point, which is what is going on here.
If nothing else comes out of this and similar threads , it does sort the snowflakes out . Maybe the eu could set up a sanctuary for them over there so we could be spared their endless bleating .

As I thought I had made clear, it was the Polish driver I share my truck with who described the French as “scum”, not me.
But I’ll pass on your thoughts to him.
You did make it clear, so both you and your mate can both quit your whining because personally I’m about ■■■■■■■ sick of it from hypocrites like you, honestly
