Freightliner

claretmatt:
All heavily unionised firms are the same. A mate of mine is a manager in the Royal Mail and he can’t do anything without running it by the union first. He says the posties he has working for him (particularly the old timers) have a terrible attitude and they regularly refuse simple, reasonable requests. It’s insubordination and he can’t do anything about it, because they hide behind the union.

Shoot them, in front of their families, oh sorry Clarkson already said that

weeto:
the only way they can be profitable is the money they get off the government, which actually makes it worse, because it is tax payers money going out the country!!
I also wait to be corrected on the above statement…

No you cant be corrected on that, every container carried by rail is subsidised, its the only way they can compete with road haulage, fact

I’ve found every f/liner a nightmare on first vist, god forbid you might have to ask what the particular way or system or standard practice is, but once you know the ropes for any indivisual depot then it seems alot quicker :open_mouth: well relatively speaking

I found Freightliner @ Garston ok, well the office staff anyway. Sure i had a few run ins, but in general they seemed ok. Had a few probs with the crane lifter drivers though. Ranging from them siting on their arse when you where the only one there for ten minutes, and you can see the feet up reading the paper, then you beep them, they look and carry on reading the paper. Had a few come down the crane to me !! This was pre–computerisation, or in FL terms stick a note in your windscreen !! Its not long ago you had to get out the cab (ignoring the signs not to !!) then shout up where your box was going and what box you wanted and where it was. I used to shout any old ■■■■ up to them, god only knows if my boxes ever made it in a smoothr un to their destination.
FL Leeds, jesus don;t get me started !! One little thing wrong on your paperwork or one minor detail missed off would not result in you drawing forward and pulling into some extra parking layby to sort it out, no way. To simple for FL. Sod off out, sort yourself out and re join the three hour queue !!! Although to be honest i was never to fussed over this as i knew that my employers had been dealing with them before i ever drove for them and if it wasn;t sorted by now then it was their look out not mine. But anyway, thats how they wher.e.
Its all good stuff on boxes, some people say its easy. If you can remember when to get out the cab, when not to. When to undo your twistlocks and when not to. Then its easy. I did like freightliners take on using the bog when i asked where it was, he said “who’s it for?”…i said “me”. I must of had a look on my face that said its going on the floor if you deny me !!
But yeah, 1970’s retro it certainly seems to be .

Big Joe:
Another regular job was going into F/L depots to retrieve boxs that had been sent to the wrong end of the country, then delivering it to the correct part of England on behalf of F/L

So you were the culprit  , although to be fair Mike I don’t think they needed any extra input from you to ■■■■ things up :grimacing:

Really, Garston? You must’ve been perfect at the window, because if anything is wrong, you’re parked up and told to walk to that other window where you’ll be ignored for hours :imp:
I’ve probably had more run ins there than anywhere else. I hate having to walk to the ‘ignore’ window because I know I’m going to be getting in trouble in the next 10 mins for shouting “Am I ■■■■■■’ invisible ya ignorant gits?” or something along those lines :smiling_imp:

Leeds, if anything is wrong, you pull inside, turn left and into the parking area, sort it out then walk to window 2, the same as if you were getting an empty.

I agree with the ‘easy’ bit though, I always say that it’s the easiest job in haulage, but when I remember my 1st time at Freightliner, my 1st time at Seaforth, my 1st time at Southampton (when I nearly got arrested :open_mouth: - I’d gone down to the gate, put in my reg, not gone through the ‘pre book’, didn’t know about it, was being flagged for a vehicle check, but spoke to the guy over the thing and was told to go get ‘pre booked’, so went straight there ignoring the vehicle check  ), trying to find my way around Tilbury etc…
Yeah, it wasn’t easy, and sometimes you go somewhere on a Friday, it’s working 1 way, go back on a Monday and it’s all changed :unamused:

Been a year or two since I’ve done box’s, but Tilbury was always the pits, the staff were fat smelly obnoxious lazy slobs hiding behind a sheet of glass more interested in watching daytime tv, they made FL Manc look like olympic gods :stuck_out_tongue: .
In a distinct contrast was Grain, I used to love going there. The staff were pleasant and courteous, smartly dressed and fragrant, would always do their best to help if a ref was wrong, and if the que started to get on the large side extra operatives were called from the back office. The pager system was also pretty cool, drivers hours and breaks could be easily managed because once the pager went off it was almost a certainty you would be loaded and out within 20 minutes.

i love doing box’s been doing now 2 years.
f l was and always will be the worst of the lot tbh, but its same as any job.

once you get to know where and how things works make for a great job.

i remember my first time at felixstowe with the crane driver,

i did not know that you had to line up your twistlocks with the box, the crane driver said,

your havin a [zb] larrrrrf,
so when he finally came down to me giving it his all,
i said well why dont you move the friggin crane, idle git. lol

fl in tilbury is a hole for me the best dock is southampton absolute peace of ■■■■ i hate going to seaforth there is a woman there looks like shes been ■■■■■■ with a bag of nettles she is normally in the first window on the left i walked up to the window once after a driver had been seen too only to be waved away however sayin that there is a lovely looking blonde sat right at the back of the office she can serve me anytime :grimacing: :grimacing:

Big Joe, I agree about Grain, lovely place, cafe’s ok, staff are good, pager system is great (if annoying when it keeps going off), and the foxes are friendly too. The road there is a nightmare though, even after the ‘improvements’ and screws your mpg’s, especially if you’re doing Grain - Dartford - Grain on scrap metal

Greggy, I disagree, Freightliner is not the worst, that accolade HAS to go to Pentalver’s - Tamworth excluded in my experience. Pentalver at Tilbury has to be the worst designed and staffed place I’ve ever been to.
That fat git behind the counter - don’t know his name - they’d changed it so you had to wear a hard hat when booking in, I was parked on the other side in that waiting area / car / truck park, so I just asked a driver outside if I could borrow his hat for 2 mins, went back in and he was like “who’s hat is that”, erm… his out there, “you need your own hat!”, mine’s in my truck right over there, this ticks the boxes, what’s the prob.
Wouldn’t book me in until I’d given that driver his hat back, went back to my truck, got my hat, came back, re-joined the new queue, then my reference number was wrong… He got a bit of a mouthfull and advised that if he got out of the chair once in a while he’d not be such a lazy, obnoxious, smelly, scruffy fat ■■■■■
New reference number sorted, back in queue, booked in, queued to get round to the lifters, they decided I was going to wait because I’d upset 1 of their staff, so tacho on break and kettle on, made a nice porridge, box put on but I wasn’t moving until I’d finished my porridge and brew.
They like to think they’re the almighty, but I had plenty of time, so they want to play the games, ■■■■ 'em :smiling_imp:

I’ve read all my posts on here, and it really does read like I’m an arrogant trouble causer or something, I promise that I’m not and these experiences are over 5yrs on the boxes and god knows how many visits to these places, but I won’t take any crap either. I choose to do this job, I used to be a network engineer but gave it up because I don’t like being indoors, I became a PSV driver but decided I didn’t like people, so this is a choice of job for me and I don’t want it ruining by little small peckered ■■■■.
I don’t go out looking for trouble, and I never provide it without request, but I won’t hold back after it’s been requested

She once shouted at me saying look at the camera not me.

Window 2 is for freightliner care, you have to go back outside.
You can’t book a loaded box it at that window.
