Its easy, charge the foregners the equivelant of a years VED on entry and that vehicle can come in for a year on that VED, simple, they pay the same as us, job done.
If you drive a truck in Europe you are already charged, whether it’s tolls or Vignettes, or maut, Go Box, or a tax in Hungary.
British trucks already pay to use UK roads, so all needed is a way of getting Foreign trucks to pay a proportion of the VED related to how long they spend in the UK. As far as I see it doesn’t break any EU competition laws, and it’s probably about £5 a day, very similar to a Vignette.
That’s very well put Muckles, sums it up quite accurately. Not much more to be said really, but you can bet the thread will run & run.

Why charge them at all?.
?.
He’s right.
I want my goods in the supermarket dirt cheap and if the companies supplying them can use foreign hauliers to ship them and thus keep the prices down thats good isnt it?.
He’s right.
If the foreign hauliers have to pay a road tax over here then the rest of Europe will charge our hauliers when we go over there on a daily or weekly basis.
Ying Yang and all that its unfair for us to it and then they dont isnt it
He’s wrong. Because of what Muckles said.
As a matter of principle to keep the cost of living down all road charges should be cancelled for transporters.
Roads should be built and maintained out of general taxation.
Mind you that would put the cost of taxation (living) up.
Oh well, back to the drawing board.
German Hauliers still pay the MAUT like us, Benelux hauliers still pay the Euro Vignette like us and French hauliers pay the same autoroute tolls as the rest of us.
So another cost of a Britpass would be paid by all of us, another tax no-one wants or can afford.

British hauliers already pay the “Britpass”, we call it VED at present, so why would British hauliers have to pay it twice ■■

Because each other country charges their own
transport companys as well as all that wish to
enter and travel on their Roads;
I think the goverment dont think they would get much money or a substancial amount to warrant the implementation of a road charging scheme.
Up here we have Vos Logistics with about 15 trucks now and up until recently they only ever went back to Holland for MOT’s now they go back for 6 week services.
What tax are they paying ?..Nothing… other than the Dutch Road Tax
If your truck was in Holland for that period, it would cost you a arm & a leg for your Eurovingitte plus what you have already paid the DVLA
It reminds me of what it was like when we all had to get permits from Newcastle, come the end of Sept / Oct they were always phoning you to see if you had spare ones especially Austria. When you went through whatever Border yours was stamped…the Austrian ran here forever using the same one as nobody bothered stamping it.
NOTHINGS CHANGED FOR YEARS…THE GOVERMENT ARE NOT INTERESTED IN FAIR PLAY FOR HAULIERS

And German Hauliers also pay the KFZ Steuer. I can’t be arsed to find the Belgian, French and Dutch sites but you can spiel mit die krauter ready reckoner
So do we want to also pay the KFZ as well as the MAUT?
Dont forget the Germans also pay road tax on the trailer, caravan or car trailer
i dont care where they are in eurofraudland or what they pAy there so as long as when they are here the pay the tax, they are back and forth all the time so just tax it there is no reason for not being made to do so
the government obviously don’t think they’d make as much by scrapping VED and having a vignette system.
I think i have the answer.
A European VED system. So therefore there would be no tolls in any EU country.
Each country would be allocated an amount of money each year depending on how many kilometres of road that they have.
Something should be done because the system at the moment gives none British hauliers a clear advantage.
Tachographs were introduced so that there would be fare competition within the haulage industry throughout europe. So why havn’t they sorted this one■■?

Because you are obviously talking about two different things. One is Vehicle Excise Duty, which we have at present, and the other is a Road User Charge, like the German MAUT or the Euro Vignette, which we don’t have at present.
If a Road User Charge was introduced it would have to apply to all users, including UK registered trucks. Now the Government might remove the VED for those paying the Road User Charge but I don’t think they would somehow, it wouldn’t be popular with the Green Lobby for a start and not a big vote winner with teh great British public. Even if they did, unless the daily, or per kilometre, charge was ridiculously low most hauliers would find themselves paying more per annum. Even £5 per day would mean most paying more than they do at the moment, less than £5 a day wouldn’t be worth operating the system really.
The only other way would be to leave the EU and as much as that may be popular with some people it is not going to happen, so like it or loath it we can only live with it.
Hauliers or drivers campaigning for a charge to be introduced would just be proof that turkeys do indeed vote for Christmas.
