France- World's Tallest Bridge Opens

news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/4091813.stm

This has been well covered in the press this week but bears repeating here.

The 890 foot tall Millau Viaduct opened this week. This is the World’s tallest bridge.

I have watched the bridge being built- Millau is a popular route to Barcelona- and it certainly is a beautiful structure.

If France can have a proper, modern, efficient road network, and a proper, modern, efficient rail network, then why can’t we?

Vince

Its a brilliant sight isnt it?

I really admire the French road system and the way they look after them. Every road is perfect, every parking area is spotless and even the verges and bushes are well trimmed all year round.

Maybe it will catch on here

but is it a bridge or a viaduct, and if you know the difference please tell me.

I believe it is officially a viaduct, and I seem to recall that a bridge becomes a viaduct if it has more than five stanchions, but I will have a look on Google right now to check if this is correct.

Vince

I thought a Viaduct carried water :open_mouth:

That’s an aquaduct, which carries aqua. A viaduct carries a via, which is a road- either a road road or a rail road.

But I’m struggling to find the official difference between a bridge and a viaduct.

I think a viaduct typically crosses a valley or other low ground, were as a bridge
crosses a road or river, though i stand to be corrected.

Yes I knew That, maybe I should have stuck to Water rather than Wine :stuck_out_tongue:

‘Concise Oxford’ says:
‘bridge -
a) a structure carrying a road, path, railway, etc., across a stream, ravine, road, railway, etc.
b) anything providing a connection between different things.’
‘viaduct -
a long bridgelike structure , esp. a series of arches, carrying a road or railway across a valley or dip in the ground.’

You pays your money and you takes your choice.

BTW if a viaduct carries roads and an acquaduct carries water, was Malc really yearning for a vinumduct?

Salut, David.

thankyou , been trying to find the difference for ages.

Has anyone been over it yet?
Only I’m off to Mazamet tomorrow and normally we go via Lux,Dijon,Lyon,Nimes,Beziers. But I think I might go via Paris and down the A75 to Beziers and check the difference in km’s and costs.

Yeah I did last week, but only in the new car I bought in the UK,the red lights looked nice!!being dark,as for distance the route it take is about the distance as going through milliau, but at least your still moving,it is a nice run through milliau looking at the river and climbing the other side of the gourge.
