Fowler Welch - Some advice

What is it you’re worried about with split coupling chap?

Probably just the fact I’ve never done it.

Is it basically the same process apart from stopping before you hit the pin and then hooking it up and then reverse fully under, do tugs etc? And I’ve read many times to definitely make sure the trailer brake is on.

Aye you’ve got it.

Back under the trailer leaving enough room to be able to climb on the catwalk.

Handbrake on unit.

Make sure the trailer handbrake is on.

Connect your lines.

Lift air suspension on unit to raise trailer legs off floor and slowly reverse into the pin.

The rest then I’m sure you know…pulling forward a couple of times to make sure the trailer is securely attached, put the dog clip(if fitted) through on the fifth wheel handle, wind your legs up,push off handbrake button on trailer, walk around and do your checks whilst putting your number plate on etc and roberts your mothers brother.

Just keep remembering your handbrakes chap

We do split coupling but whenever an agency bod or a new start comes in he is shown all this before they are let lose on their own so surely Fowler Welch would do the same as they are also a big company.

Fowler -Welch now have some curtain siders for the ambient loads they do

So try not to worry to much but if in doubt ask

The only thing to be sure of when you are split coupling is that the trailer park break is on before you connect your lines or else the trailer will roll off the back of the unit and you will be sacked. Don’t wind the legs up till you engage the pin.

more likely dead

Cheers for all the advice.

What about the manual entry on tacho, is that straightforward enough to work out?

I need a full time job doing this so I get used to everything, rather than this only available one day every other weekend, and hopefully enjoy it as I hate what I do now.

Anything you aint sure about just ask, they are genuinely a canny set of lads in the office and would rather you ask than make a hash of things,

manual entries, arnt f.w mainly volvo, siemens, years since ive used one ,but easy if i remember right,i use stoneridge, very simple, the ones who tell you its hard are just using it as a excuse not to do them,so theyve got a fallback to get back[take there 15 hrs from when they insert card and not from when they arrive at work],also they can bang in 17/18/20 hrs,4 hrs waiting for truck, put in card,do 15 hrs that day, then put the other 3/4/5 hrs on a slack day,as i say there easy on either type of tacho, anyone who says there difficult just dont want to do them for above reasons.
any other problems ASK,i often get asked about fridges, manual entries, gearboxes, how to open bonnet by agency, young drivers and always help,i guess f.w lads would be the same

Hi,
re load floor plans etc: other depots give you in with the paperwork a floorplan produced by the guys in loading (warehouse). This shows usually the name of the sender of the goods and whreabouts it is on the trailer. There will be 26 spaces for 26 pallets, if there is a diagonal line through one of the boxes on the plan it means that there are two half pallets stacked on top of one another. You will also get the delivery notes. You won’t really have a problem unless you have two deliveries, in which case do make sure that you understand which one is nearest the doors on the trailer and timed for the earlier delivery. Check this paperwork out at the traffic office and ask if you are not sure ie " is the first delivery the one at the top or the bottom of this delivery note?" you should find that there is a time given for the drop. For all supermarket RDC drops ask what the margin either side of “time” is - it will likely be 15 before; 25 after, but be sure.

Second to the comment about first time blindside reverse. Only the ones who have cut a hole in the cab roof so that there is room for their head, don’t have good days and bad days reversing. The most important thing is to do it safely and not hit anything or anyone. How many shunts it takes really doesn’t matter that much.

As for the tacho: FW have both makes, again just ask another company driver, say that you have only used the other make or something like that.

Split coupling: HANDBRAKE, HANDBRAKE, HANDBRAKE. As with normal coupling follow the same routine and don’t alter it. Engine off. If something is different or you are interrupted, triple check everything, get back in the cab and recheck the lorry handbrake is on if worried - how long does that take to be sure someone isn’t going to die? It is so,so easy if something is out of the ordinary to forget lorry or trailer handbrakes or the coupling dog chain. These things are like shutting the front door - you do them automatically without thinking and can’t remember doing them; so make sure.
