Any word on the new roadscapes book Dave?

Hi Jim,
The book is out in October roadscapes.co.uk
Alan Spillett has retired now,but has still got some prints and a few originals for sale if you look on his website.
The book will be available from Old Pond Publishing.
Cheers Dave.

Dennis, those Smiths wagons were all 4wheelers they were the bread and butter of the fleet back then. When Dad started there in '78 they were still the dominant motors, although these were TKs, KMs and a couple of ergo cabbed Super Comets. They had a few dropside tippers for when they supplied bagged cement/bitumin barrels etc (before my time!).

Environment Agency wouldn’t like those fuel tanks nowadays, without bunds etc…

Finally, it’s modern day counterpart;

Hi Bewick, Congratulations on a great thread you,ve started here. I have only just caught it as I haven’t been on much lately due to having another heart “event” (details on Jumbulance thread). Anyway, I thought I might try to post a few old pics. of some of my “old nails” (or should that be snails!). Nowhere near in the same league as your good self, you understand, but I think they qualify under this thread heading and when reading your posts of the early years, I can empathise with them, I just never moved on! :laughing: I’ll start with some motors, about 2 years in, '74 ish and a bit of a motley gaggle! :open_mouth: The damage on the ■■■■■■ van was down to 'er in doors,… well she used to come out and drive in those days! :unamused: Only way I could find to save it was to convert it into a pickup, (pics to follow later) and a good tool it turned out to be! :sunglasses: The ex Newey & Eyres BMC van (3rd back) was bought as a stop gap, but didn’t survive long enough to get painted, as it threw a leg out of bed coming up the M1 one day (her again!) :astonished: We towed it to the field for her to use as a horse food store, so not a total loss. :cry:
At the rear is my first “Proper Lorry” :confused: a rare machine indeed! like a walk through Commer, but with a flat body on, twin wheels on the back and could carry 3 tons. Because of the flat body it couldn’t have sliding doors on, but were bi folds instead. More stories and pics on that later too!

One for the AEC aficionado’s :smiley:

Roy and Ann Morgan in their Ford D800 tipper.

Evening all, Dave, those D800 Fords, whenever you stopped at traffic lights on a hill, yanked on that umberella handbrake, pound to a pinch of s…t, the thing would jam on!! In the end I always carried a great long screwdriver, (like a cross between a crowbar and screwdriver), that always when judiciously wiggled seemed to do the trick, and free it off!! But not before some motorist in an A35 had started to exercise his electronic horn, Peep Peep! I seem to remember that the design team who were responsible for the D Series were headed up by ex Guy employees, so was the handbrake Wolverhamptons revenge?? Cheerio for now.

Hi Saviem,
I drove a D series six wheeler on a H plate,didn’t have any problem with the handbrake.I remember having to turn the gearstick around to tilt the cab.Not a bad lorry with the 360 turbo.Not a long lasting lorry,but they were cheap and light with a 13 ton + payload at 20 gross on a tipper.
Cheers Dave.

Sounds like “a bear with a coconut” to me!!! You didn’t need “yank” the handbrake so far on the D series Fords to fully apply the hand brake!!! The linkage ran back to a ratchet and piston inside the chassis(well it did on the D1000) So,providing the brakes were in reasonable adjustment ( probably doubtful on some of the motors you had through your hands “Saviem” !!) The handbrake would be fully applied in just half the travel on the handbrake mechanism in the cab.There was no need to put your “gurt” size 10’s on the dash and PULL!!! dear oh dear pass the “Grouse” bottle Anne please!! Cheers all Dennis.
