Four people dead in Bath after truck incident [Merged]

Muckaway:
Still ongoing investigation. Been told I can’t say more.

So things aren’t as clear cut as drivers lost control?

I can say bath council have totally over reacted and made that road even more dangerous.
They’ve fitted a single lane chicane half way down on the steepest part, so now you have to use your brakes regardless, whereas before you’d often get away without touching them until the bottom. They have also put a 20mph limit on the majority so again, people are riding the brakes the whole way down and then wondering why they can’t stop when the hit the chicane.
I went down it last week and there was almost a pile up of the cars in front of me.

You use a thing called gears :unamused:

Us oldies know that (or should) but that’s not how they’re taught to drive nowadays with all the enviroballox being spouted.

I was doing one of those SAFED courses and was “corrected” for using downshifts to slow the lorry down. I still do it when necessary, after all by not downchanging you’re making the engine/exhaust brake less efficient.

I didn’t think many trucks used the road as it had restrictions in place and the only reason the tipper was there was because it was going to a building site on the road.

A relative of one of the victims has said trucks should be banned from roads around schools. Now I understand her suffering and what not but how does she expect all the building materials which were or still are being used to build an extension on the school in question to get there? Bins emptied and foodstuffs what the children and staff consume also?

The problem is not vehicles driving past schools but the way they drive past them.
A lot of schools have 20 mph limits but the majority of drivers tend to ignore them.
If drivers would drive responsibly there would be far less issues and far less people injured and killed.

Also factor in the stupid parking of mums in their 4x4s on the school run who’s kids only live around the corner or 5 mins walk away, usually parked on the zig zag markings and its a recipe for disaster sometimes.

I do, always have done, hence why I said you’d get away without braking until the bottom. You can’t stop a vehicle with just the gears believe it or not, and now with the chicane, you have to stop if someone is coming the other way.

To be fair, the quoted message specifically refers to folks “riding the brakes all the way down” - I suspect it was this bit that Nick was addressing with his “use the gears” comment (using said gears would of course leave the brakes nice and usable when the chicane was reached). That’s certainly how I read it. Maybe you could follow your own advice…? :grimacing:

Never mind worrying about lorries near schools, I’d be more concerned with the state of the school buses; Rejected by the exporter these once “luxury” coaches are driven in a cloud of smoke to the school gates by equally decrepid drivers who must’ve got Stevie Wonder to sign their medical forms.

He also included a sarcastic rolling eye smilie, which to me reads as “use the gears you idiot”. Maybe if he was referring to the cars I was on about, he should have made it clearer and said “maybe the car drivers should learn to use the gears”. No ambiguity there, but he didn’t, did he?

And so, the same argument starts again… Well done for dragging it up.

Gears for forward. Brakes to slow.

How can you aide and abet though? Are the authorities saying that the other driver was going too fast thus the inexperienced driver was trying to catch up?
I occasionally tip and load out of some the places where the firm concerned work out of, and it has been said that no faults were found with the vehicle. Have heard several accounts of what happened but they wont be allowed to be published here until after the court proceedings I’d guess.

Just done a google search, the other person charged is the director of Grittenham Haulage.

I wonder if the aiding and abetting has more to do with the way the company was running it’s drivers, perhaps it is felt they were being pushed to brake rules to get the work done?

It has seemed to have taken a long time to being charges.
