Forth and Caledonian

Another 86 without the sun. this time its Caledonian,Vic

When I was mate on Brady’s Octopus in the 60s we stopped,more-or-les,every Sunday and usually Monday nights at Walfords cafe in Llansamlet,Swansea and there was always a couple of Caledonian Carnation lads there as well. One of them was called “Baldy Keenan” a grand little chap, always had a smile on his face. They used to re-load tin plate back to the Carnation factory at Dumfries.

That picture was taken in the Immingham depot opposite the garage, heres a couple more taken at the same time. The Fisons tanker is on sulpher, a product that Caledonian did plenty of out of Immingham, and if anybody has got any pictures of the 1418s on sulpher it would be nice to see them. My old man was on that job and I remember my school holidays in the 1418s.

Spent some time on 1418s my self but not on the Caledonian.Vic.

The F86 UFU 943J was a regular vehicle delivering toluene from Immingham to Albright and Wilson West Bank Dock Widnes site in the 70s.It was always the same driver,I can’t remember his name though.

hiya,
Vic I don’t have pics never took any not very good with cameras and would’nt know how to post them anyway but i do enjoy and appreciate the work of others who give me so much enjoyment by reading and viewing all the stuff that you guys go to the trouble to post, my daughter has tried to show me how to post pics but to no avail i think she remarked that i must be brain dead if i can’t follow a few simple instructions, she slammed the puter lid shut and went home saying i should be back in the steam age and i’m beginning to think she’s right, now the question is did Tayforth ever run steamers might get a job as a coal shoveller and eventually become a driver.

Re Forth and Caledonian and( Mc kinnons)!!!

That’s a nifty photo of the old Seddon Vic - I remember the first one of those we got, and everyone was fighting over it. It looked pretty swish compared to the old 21/4s we were using. Remember those vans as well. ‘CLVs’ they were called weren’t they?

Mostly full of Johnnie Walker too

hiya,
Shunted one of these when a guy was stuck in Consett depot broken down OK when loaded but a nightmare when light/laden or empty in a cross wind situation it was windy on that day bit of a heart in the mouth situation.
thanks harry long retired.

Love this thread. Brought back so many memories. My Dad (R.I.P.) worked for Road Services (Forth) out of Alloa from about '65 to about '78. I remember sitting beside him in various lorries - Albion Snowcat, Albion Reiver (I think that’s what it was called, with the L.A.D. cab), ‘D’ reg AEC Mandator, ‘H’ Reg Two Pedal Leyland Beaver (very similar to SMS 553H posted earlier) I never forgot the reg no of his - SMS 625H Fleet No 258. I remember going with him from Johnnie Walker in Kilmarnock to Grangemouth docks with Sealand Containers. There was the distillery in the middle of Kilmarnock and a Bonded warehouse outside Kilmarnock if I’m not mistaken. I also remember going with him to pick up a weird looking Bedford unit (it was a KM) that he drove from Dumbarton to Grangemouth Docks. I remember another Forth driver coming across to look at it, and my Dad moving the steering wheel effortlessly saying to the other driver “Look at this, power steering, it’s rubbish it’ll never catch on!” How times have changed. I also remember the single axle vans similar to the one pictured behind the Seddon that the Forth had for Patons and Baldwins but they were open topped and covered with a tarp.
Searching through old photos looking for any lorries but not optimistic. I know he never took a camera with him, it was a job not a hobby!!!

Thats right Harry,we used to take wool from Paton Baldwins to Alloa, not good as you say , coming down over Johnnie Walker’s that was ok,a bit of a problem with the axle right at the back, vic.

Hi what was your dads name i might of known him?vic.

More RSF memories.
Dad’s name was Gifford Scobie. I remember one Saturday morning about '75 he came home and told me to look outside. He had the Transcon! (The one pictured coupled to a tank) It was only about a week old at the time. But he knew they would never buy more as I think it was about £9000 at the time. A Guy Big J was about £6000. So obviously more Big J’s followed!!! After he left the Forth he worked for Crokerton, there is a picture of him with his DAF on the Crockerton thread.

Strawman,i had a look at the photo and zoomed it up to 400 and i do remember him but just by sight, iused go in to alloa in the Jimmy Cameron days and also did night change overs with a driver from alloa called John (Jock) Lawson.vic.
