I always seem to meet the ones that say i am TOO late,TOO early, and they did not order what i am delivering to them,so he will have to check while i wait.
I got to one place, with very odd break times signed up on the door, i arrive at 15.00,the sign says it shuts at 15.20, the forky in a foul mood mutters they are shut, and i have caused a major inconvenience by having the cheek to turn up and expect to be unloaded.
He goes to get his machine, while swearing and muttering under his breath, i should have said ok, and just driven off.
For some reason, some think that they own the place they are working at, is it an inferiorty complex, or have built up a defence against rude and bolshy drivers that may have given them grief in the past.
On a different note, i thought that i have seen it all, when tipping at a RDC, the sign in the loo says not to spit and blow your nose in the wash basin, and the cleaning staff must wear full PPE, to empty the bin in the loo and wear a face mask, also on this site you must fasten up your high viz, with the velcro or zip, failure to do so means eviction and banning from the site.
One morning in the canteen I listened to a fellow driver ranting on about all the awkward, bolshie goods-in people he met on a daily basis. He did pretty much the same job as me then, and we delivered to the same customers (though not on the same day).
Now I had a different experience - sure there were one or two that felt they were doing me a favour by unloading me, but for the most part I had a good relationship with them.
Go figure as they say.
Or i do not know that the previous driver that has just left the premises has wound up the forky, so i get it in the neck to pay for that maybe, and he is venting is anger at the next man that comes in to the yard.

i met a forky driver like that once, i just gave him a hug and told him too go have a cuppa and a choccy biccy
As soon as i get there i am polite, but they are in a mood, and can be rude.

I tend to have had the same experiences as Santa. Generally speaking I get on pretty well with most forkies I meet.
If I meet one that has an attitude problem, I try not to make it mine as well! I’m pleasant, smile, well mannered, and help where I can, and it sort of works for me.
Like Santa said, go figure!
The most favoured welcome is “what time do you call this.?.”
Some of them make you feel like a bloody cold call salesman, trying to explain its their bloody stuff can be rather trying.
Trying to explain why the Rotors on the top of your trailer would not deploy, so you could fly over the accident that made half the country late can also be a little tiresome, after all thats why we have them and they’re no use if they don’t work.
I just take the message they give me, phone the office and explain and dive head first into the bunk making sure the phone is within easy reach.
It says ERF not RAF goes down quite well.
Our depot forkie is off work currently with stress!!!
Must be all those pallets and cages he has to load in the morning… Very stressful
I tend to treat people how I would want to be treated, this doesn’t always work, but if your pleasant generally people are less likely to be grumpy and will let you unload even if you are early/late.
went to one place years ago, told “you’re too late, come back tomorrow”, … long story short, started rerpoing the part of the load I’d just undone
forkie: what you doin drive?
me: taking it back as you’ve just refused it …
I managed to get as far as the gate before the depot manager came chasing after me . … forkie had to unrope the whole load and unload it. He also lost his job for refusing an urgent load 2 hours before hiss clocking off time
A forky with a hissy fit.
With some people, give them a little authority and it goes straight to their head. Also, some people just like to moan and talk BS to make themselves appear better.
The key to forky drivers is to bullpoo them up, tell them that they are the best you have seen on one of them for a long time, anything to make the feel good, it works with me, even though I can’t stand them. They can make your life hell especially if your going back again
If i can play devils advocate for a mo i tend to find that most drivers are ok but some are just a pain in the arse not everybody wants to hear what they have done all week or what there traffic managers as told them to do and that they want to get you in and get you out so they can go home.
I have seen both sides to this as a FLT and a driver and i find that most of the time if your ok with them on the whole they are ok with you. When i started driving i used to keep in mind what i would be like if i was the FLT driver and take it from there.
The RDC.s where the worst but thats the nature of the beast. Now iam running the warehouse agian i try to take on board the side of the driver as well but sometimes you have to bite your tongue when you get a driver thats got an attitude or ask you the most stupid things and trust me they do , if they come in with the right attitude iam as good as gold but they dont always do. And one thats thing what the f%*@ is a Forkie
I find that builders merchant forkies are the worst, complete nob jockeys most of them

Would you consider that a step up the ladder?
Perhaps theres a few flt drivers around that used to be lorry drivers and get fed up hearing the "i started work at stupid oclock and ive got to be in so and so by . . "
What I’ve learned from the odd fork driver is that the whole world stops when they’re on their break.

Thats the worst thing that can happen on multi-drop, the first time on it and they all have different T breaks and then different dinner breaks.
You start saying this is impossible. lol
Once you get to know it your finishing 3 hours early. lol
