Well there i was, wednesday morning tootling down the M1 around 6-6;30 hissing down with rain etc when a foriegn bright orange scanny with a Frenzel CV trailer comes up in the middle lane to overtake me, nothing strange there i hear!
So i takes a peek in his cab as he’s up the side of me and couldn’t quite believe it, the guy has a centre dash table with a laptop on it watchin a movie and swiggin from what looked like a can of red stripe !!!
Now forgive me if im wrong but !! I thought centre dash tables wern’t allowed■■?

Sure it was red stripe? I’d guess Stella…same colours and you can often get it on special at tesco. Also aldi do a strong continental style lager in similar cans. Just saying like.

Normally they are not allowed, but there is an exemption where the vehicle and driver are from different EU countries, one or other of which was not an EU member state prior to September 1997, provided that the journey commenced not more than 48 hours earlier, crossed at least two EU boundaries (not including any boundary of the driver’s home country), and that use of the table is necessary for the purpose of preventing spillage, seepage or discharge of canned beverages into watercourses or other open drains. Persons to whom this exemption applies are required to demonstrate disregard for (or serious misunderstanding of) at least two provisions of the Highway Code while the vehicle is in motion, and be able to offend local customs regarding decent behaviour in respect of urination in public areas. VOSA can tell if this exemption applies using the latest version of OCRS with EU-ANPR enhancements.

lol!!! I knew this was coming… We exchanged places a few times on that stretch of the 25 where it’s a bit up and down on Reigate hill etc he was heavy and I was light (and in my V8 ) he was faster on the limiter so yes I will admit I rather enjoyed having a bit in cab entertainment on an evening!!!
Only really made me think of it today when i was stuck on the M40 for two hours due to a car transporter turning upside down and spilling his load of range rovers all over the motorway, then after getting off at jct 15 and heading up the A45 towards Coventry there was another closure due to a four car pile up and the fire crew having to cut the top off a car to get to the occupants.

EU Law 271/A/ 4719 Clearly states " Centre Dash tables ARE permitted if covered by Tablecloth,National Flag,Beer Towel or any other fabric based cover…
This clause comes under sub-section ‘Spreadovers Excemption’ which is sadly often confused by Euro-Chauffeurs as Speedover Excemption
Ahh Happysack, you are undoubtably referring to Aldi’s St Etienne lager, which does look uncannily like Red Stripe in the glare from a laptop in the cab, you can be forgiven for your mistake, I am enjoying such a can as I write, (£2.99 for 4, Alc 4.8% Vol), other brands are available, just not at this price.
Just to add the can he was drinking may have been an energy drink that looked like a can of Red Stripe beer, some of the cheaper Red Bull imitations have the same markings, maybe he got the energy drink from eastern europe.
