Seen on BBC teletext a Portuguese driver been done for dangerous driving while leaving a lay by in the UK,on wrong side of the road killing a driver, who slowed to avoid him, thinking he would transgress to the correct side.To be honest,i have done this, and others to,without admitting it.After a long few months in Euroland, came to the UK,set off early, without waking up properly, and was on wrong side of a roundabout outside the headquarters of the Police station.Lucky no one on the road at the time.Abroad,it can happen, getting the wrong side,if a hurry or over tired.
I have done it twice, both times in the UK. once in the car and more worrying, once in the truck when I turned out of a factory and was heading towards a Ford Fiesta. I stopped because I thought this prat was going to crash into me. I got the benefit of the doubt as I was on german plates in a left ■■■■■■, so he just waved and pointed to the other side.
Did it three four times in my live.
Once in UK, i pulled into the layby on the right without checking that there is a car oncoming.
Once just after i left speedferries terminal in Bologne, I took the roundabout wrong way.
Twice in Poland, I entered left roadway on dualcarriageway (luckily it was empty) and once I almost had a head on crash with my cousin in front of my parent’s house.
Over a period of more than 20 years I must admit it has happened to me a few times usually with early morning starts on both sides of the water. Only by the grace of God has it never turned in to an accident
only ever made the mistake once. coming out of the IDS fuel site at irun and i took the roundabout as if in the uk.
Never gone the wrong way round the roundabout, but have pulled out after tippin n realised i was on the wrong side of the road…this has happened both sides of the water, n no doubt i’l do it again sooner or later
I’ve done that. I came out of a factory about 06.00hrs in Northampton I think it was. Turned right onto the right had side of the road and saw a UK police car coming towards me on the wrong side of the road. The first thing that came to mind was, “WTF is he doing over here”, then, “He must think he’s at home and will twig in a minuet and move over”. He didn’t I did. I felt such a fool. Anyway he looked at me when passing then turned round, pulled me over and was busting a gut to nick me for dangerous driving but luckily didn’t. My god that was a close one. I even kept driving straight at him for about 100yrds expecting him to move over.

Is that a metaphor for something fingaz!!
When I first started I was 24hrs loading handball apples at one Rothschild s farms in France .Outside the gates was one of those long straight country roads . The foreman stood outside the gate & waved me out into the road ; I pulled away up the incline & saw all the farm boys waving goodbye to me ! I am looking in the mirror waving back until I saw this French bull nosed truck bearing down on me & flashing his lights! Of course they were not waving goodbye they were trying to tell me I was on the wrong side. The other time was in Cornwall in a rented car .I had 3 women in the car having a heated discussion when I turned left from a T junction & everything went quiet - I was driving EU side.
Anyone that says they have never done that is telling little porkies me thinks lol. Ive done it both sides in the truck and over here in my bloody car lol
Done it many years ago, pulled into a pub carpark to get directions very late and dark night…turned out of the car park, driving along and looked over the high hedge and noticed a car running paralle to me in the same direction…thought funny…like you do…until i met him at the end of the dual carriagway…phew! makes your heart go bump!
Captainking
Totally agree with “kerwyn”, it must be fairly common, I did it again just a few weeks ago, I have left and right hand drive cars and was leaving my house in the right ■■■■■■ on the wrong side for 50 yards before correcting myself, luckily it’s a residential area. I see it fairly often down here, usually an elderly brit in a rental car
as you come out of calais towards belgium heading for transmarck up the sliproad and turn left to go over motorway i took left hand lane and crossed the bridge on the wrong side
luckily was night time and nobody coming the other way
As you can see this is happening a lot more often than many of you thought and mainly happens to drivers who constantly have to change the side of the road that they drive on.
This driver will now be judged by someone who has no such experience relying instead on a rule book to pass judgement.
And before anyone starts screaming about foreign drivers remember this can and has frequently has happened to drivers of all nationalities including your own.
Might it happen to you one day as well ■■?

I know what you’re saying, and no doubt they’ll be loads of pontificating by the Police and judge saying that as a professional driver he should have been aware.
I’ve often had to check myself when driving my car in the UK. I also managed to end up on the wrong side of the road on my first truck trip abroad. No problem all day until I turned down a road to goto the village were I was going to stop that night. Must of driven for about a mile before I realised, I did wonder why the bloke fishing on the river than ran by the side of the road gave me such a strange look
When i used to do mainly European(years ago), woke up after a rare Uk night out, pulled the curtains open and thought “■■■■ me ,theres a lot of Brits in here today”
. . I was at Jacks hill cafe
I haven’t managed yet, but I have got my hand well and truly struck in a door pocket while trying a quick gear change. Another thing is waving your arm around in the middle of the cab looking for the seatbelt

Couldn’t agree more, like others I’ve done it in truck and motorhome (LHD) but have been lucky and got away with
The bit in red is though the big problem, aren’t we all, regardless of nationality, judged by the same type of person(s)? and let’s face it he’s already been “tried” by the press and public who, without the knowledge and experience of drivers here, will have found him guilty
My “moment” already mentioned above was when I was in the UK after a weekend at home. I should have been in “home mode” but I remember the event distinctly. I had a Monday delivery to Portishead and the factory entrance was on a piece of old road that had been bypassed forming a lay-by.
I turned right out of the factory gate, there was no traffic and no road markings at the end of the lay by, well there wouldn’t be, I was on the wrong side of the road. As I reached the main road I looked left, the road was again clear and I continued towards the M5 on the wrong side of the road It was only when I saw this Fiesta coming towards me that I thought, "what is this prat doing? I realised he was going to hit me. I stopped to avoid a collision, then suddenly realised my mistake
That was after 20 years driving on both sides of the road in Left and Right hand drives.
As seen on news, eldery person on a motabilty scooter, those buggies with 4 wheel types powered by batteries, was escorted off the motorway going the wrong way.
