Around the time my fuel tank strap wanted replacing…L200’s of a similar age were suffering from rotten sub-frames.
Toyota are great off road…but sheet on road.
You want a motor that can pull a pig trailer through a muddy field, cover distance with the family(in luxury)and look good in the golf club car park?
Has to be green oval.
The L200 is a Mitsubishi.
And the Series and Defender chassis are not corrosion free, nor the Disco body, especially the rear end.
Toyota 4x4 bad on the road?
I think you’re making a sweeping statement there. Some years of Disco and Prado/Colorado might be angled more towards either on or off road but none are too bad.
I’ve had Landys, Mitsis, and Toys, and none have been rubbish, but for now I’m happy with my Toy.
Yes,I know L200 is a Mitsubishi.
But similar age LR don’t fail MOT’S with the arse end hanging off.
All those crew cab ute’s are sheet on road…ranger being slightly better.
One of my few experiences of a Jap twin cab was with a new Mitsu back in about 2006. It was metallic blue and silver and loaded with big alloys etc. from the factory. I used it both unladen and laden. Unladen I found it skittish on the road. Laden it handled reasonably but, using it in a very holly region, I found the brakes were truly awful. They were fading like crazy. Really not my cup of tea.
And then I heard later, in Oz, that the rear chassis would crack and could literally break away! I believe You Tubes has videos illustrating this quite graphically. But these twin cabs are hugely popular all over the world. I do not really understand why as they have so little load space to offer for the price they sell for. Most users would be better off with a trailer for the odd load.

Was the big selling point, at least here in UK, the fact you could write 100% of cost off as an expense but out of sight of the taxman still pick up kids from school in one.
Not sure if they would be allowed at the golf club, but look more presentable at the weekend than a Renault Trafic.
Twin cabs gained popularity here due to commercial VED rates and if qualifying as ‘dual purpose’ have car speed limits, an ideal vehicle for dogs etc with a fitted canopy, same height canopy gives a really long roof rack.
Yes the base models handle awful, especially with the typical tyres fitted at factory at typical pressures, do some research fit the right tyres at sensible pressures and they’re completely different, generally a lot simpler than the full sized 4x4’s they share a lot of drivetrain etc with, i’m particularly not a fan of such vehicles when fitted with a limited slip rear axle, where a live axled pick up with normal diff will tend to pick up the inside tyre on a corner and spin it out with the one with grip keeping the vehicle on track, the one fitted with the limited slip diff does tend (especially if the tyres and pressures ain’t been thought out) to act like a locked diff, both drive axle tyres lose grips together and you’re in a full oversteer slide, been there done that, took immediate remedial tyre action which cured it completely.
Chassis rust in an issue with most ladder chassis vehicles (be interesting to know what if any anti corrosion measures MB take with their G wagens and VW with Amaroc), but as with all vehicles the sensible owner takes on board known possible problems and takes steps to mitigate the failings, and yes all makes have weaknesses.

Plus one on the load space.
Great big [zb] things, but can’t carry my fishing rods.
Better off with an A6 estate.
I’ve got the current model CeeD on an 68 plt and with the seats down can get a 6 ft wardrobe in and shut the tail gate
Beats a Focus hands down on spec and warranty

Vw are galvanised
Now that is interesting, Amarok now short listed for future, i wouldn’t have considered a Gelandewagen due to even more stupid used pricing that Landcruisers, i did nearly buy one over 20 years back, a SWB automatic 4 pot petrol, low mileage in pristine condition at around £6k if my memory serves, it’s probably worth twice or more that now.
Much obliged to me learned friend.
Be aware that VAG had issues with the galvanising process for a short time.
This manifested as paint defects caused by oxidation between the galv and the paint.

Thanks, it’s something i’d spend a long time on research before committing, i’m a Toyota user generally, unless the current bangers fall apart this is hopefully several years away.
Everything could change over the next couple of budgets anyway, trying to second guess what the muppets in govt might do twenty minutes hence is nigh on impossible, the only clue is if DePfeffel categorically states that something will or won’t happen, you can be 99% certain the opposite will be the case within the week.

It’s clear where they are going Juddian. They are going to ‘equalise’ the cost per kwh of petrol/diesel/domestic gas/heating oil with electric.
Too late to tell the sheep be careful what they wished for. This is all going to be an economic nightmare. That’s just trying to keep the house warm let alone trying to drive anywhere at 18p per kwh + road fuel taxes.

What’s really worrying is the increasing number of hair shirt wearers who want more of whatever the experts pundits apparatchiks and politicians tell us we must have, virtue signalling disciples repeating cult like the call for more state more govt more lockdowns more ‘vaccine’ etc…oh and send dissidents to the gulag for re-education, strip them of their homes and savings and house more deserving families who have nothing (maybe cos never done a days work in their lives ) in them, that’ll show deplorables, soon to be known as domestic terrorists, not to object eh comrade.
I did at one time think the legions of devout followers might be horrified when the utopia becomes reality, but now not so sure they won’t actually bask in some sort of self induced ectasy in the hell they voted for, maybe they’ll believe it won’t affect them because they read from the correct hymnsheet, a brief study of what happens to useful idiots once they’ve aided the totalitarian usually communist regime into power and now considered no longer useful or maybe a danger and possibly know where the bodies are buried, might sober a few up…
No it won’t Juddian ^^^ they’ll merely stand like performing seals on their doorsteps clapping enthusiastically at whatever freedom has now been permanently stripped away.

Absolutely agree.Communism is clearly building up a frightening head of steam the brainwashing has equally clearly worked.Truth has turned out stranger than fiction.
My guess is that it threw down the gauntlet and we’re seeing the surrender terms being gradually enacted.
A regime in which an elite have an unquestioning dependent, enslaved under class serving them, who believe that their dependency is good for them, what’s not to like for the Gates’ and Soros’ etc of this world.
As opposed to having to face it down with the threat of mutually assured destruction. The elites obviously have/had too much to lose in that showdown.
Just wish I’d been born 10 years earlier but with only around 10-15 years left to go, unless the ‘vaccine’ is meant to bring that forward, could have been worse.

That was eerie earlier in the year, reminded me of totalitarian states with crowds of people outdoing each other to cheer the apparatchiks as they passed by, terrified they might be noticed and reported as not being enthusiastic enough and find themselves in hot water.
Not sure who was bemused more by the spectacle, my mrs who could hardly believe her eyes or the dogs who peered cautiously through the gates beside her.
Sadly i come to the same conclusion as you Maoster, no matter how far this goes we’ll have millions calling for still more.
As CF, wish i was about 10 years older so didn’t have to see what becomes of the country before completely gaga.

Frightened the life out me the first time the clap happened, I was parked up in Bedford idly perusing x hamster, as I finished there was a round of applause! For a moment I thought that I’d forgotten to close my curtains!

How did a perfectly reasonable enquiry about a CD player end up in crazy rants that seem to come out of a psychiatric ward? What is going on here?
Have you never had a conversation in a pub or a cafe with a bunch of blokes?

Depends if the cafe is in Beijing or Bristol.Surely they’ll give us all the option of reeducation before being sectioned for disagreeing with the Great Leader.
To be fair in the brave new world the question could be how much current will a CD player take out of an EV’s batteries. Also bearing in mind it’s paid for at 16p per kwh + road fuel duty + 20% VAT even if it doesn’t flatten the batteries.Maybe plugging in the phone is better after all that’s why they’ve ditched CD’s across the board.
