FORD 4D

Another Ford i remember from my younger days is the FORD 4D,
The name change of Fordson to FORD, came about, bonneted motor as well, previous cab on Fordson flat front, looked like
built lorry rammed it into wall, that"s looking different to all bonneted lorries on road we"ll have that.
I think the 4D engine was designed for lorry and boat uses,in boats still years after 4Ds were forgot about in this country.
But years later we were on holiday in Spain,1974-5 kept seeing these 4Ds,all over the place used by Coca cola but was not
badged FORD, “PEGASO” something like that.i think.start of Spanish lorry industry?

I THINK that Ford’s in Spain were badged as EBRO’s. The 4D was used in all sorts of applications, from JCB’s, commpressor sets, boats as well as lorries. I seem to recall them being mounted on the rear in the Thames 15 cwt truck as a commpressor engine but the engine also drove the vehicle wheels, I think that it was called a “Power Truck”?
They were a decent engine and continued in the D series but inclined slightly.

Pete.

My dads family business ran the Ford 4Ds in the late 50s early 60s,the flat fronted truck i think may have been designed for use by the war department. My dad used to run, like a lot of haulage firms at the time ex-army trucks bought from auctions.I think the 4D was petrol engined, my dad removed these and replaced them with the diesel engine. He used to run four wheel tippers on coal and haulage complete with ‘greedy boards’ on the tipper so he could get 10 ton on.If you can picture the film Hell Drivers thats what the trucks looked like.

Hi guys hope you don’t mind a technical correction. The 4D engine was also fitted to fordson tractors but not the D series, the 4D engine was fitted with wet liners and had a venturi governor fuel pump.If a venturi pipe broke the engine revved to maximum and would not stop. The engine fitted to the D series was dry lined and had a mechanical governored pump.
