This was the boring route I gave to somebody on here…

The latest update at 20.22 on the 3rd June 2006 is

The tunnel is now expected to stay closed for 3 (three) weeks due to another rock fall.

Don

I was watching te swiss tele last night and they had a programme dealing
with the Göthard Tunnel and the problem of the rock fall,It seems that in other parts of thecswiss they use radar systems to work as a early warning system,
and this is what they are considering to use in the Göthard as well,The geoligist are checking the area out via helicopters and will decideing where the rockface will be cleared useing explosives. The San Bernidino Route is
due to the extra traffic at present haveing very long traffic jams,
For persons who have used the swiss as a short cut to Italy ,the trainservice at FRIEBURG may offer a better route, the only problem being that --““4:00M””
height due to the tunnels, the trains run regular and you can when you have booked the route also run at 42tn (you must ask when booking due to the
capacity for 42tns is only the first 6-8 trucks ),THE train comes inat NOVERA
in Italy which is about 30mins from Milan,

brit pete The reason for the rock fall is because of the strange weather. The snow melted & the water went into the cracks in the rocks. When it froze again the water expanded & caused fissures in the rocks. I have a good friend in Swiss that keeps me up to date. ( Dont take this the wrong way ,but if you are using Internet Explorer there is a handy little spellcheck you can use on any forum. Try ieSpell`…I do.) It goes into your Tools section & you drop it down when you need it . I hope a lot of other guys see this as well. & its free.

And I need to sort out the B button!!!

I wonder if it works on a German PC…?

Could somebody give me a link to this train service please. Is it frieght only or does it take other traffic?

Don

the service is for freight only at FREIBURG, if you wish to take a car there is a service from BASEL and also by the Gotthard is also a train service in operation,If you are going by car to Italy the San Bernadio route is openbut with the amount of traffic it is slow moveing ,If you are thinking of this route ,my tip would be to either cross the alps late at night or early morning when the traffic is not so heavy this is no problem for car users, The pass is snow free at present,
where are you headed for in Italy and what are you driveing,

Thanks for the offer Pete, been transiting Switzerland for 20 years now so know my way around.

I often use the Lotsberg train from Kandersteg to Goppenstien and then over the Simplon it’s a reasonable price for my motorhome.

“”“UP-DATE 6TH JUNE”“” The Tunnel will remain closed for the next THREE WEEKS,
If you use the 2nd site mentioned already in the posts from early ,this has a good route programme, which shows the best route to avoid the road closeures and other distractions which hamper road traffic,

To day posted on the TRUCK INFO SITE for Switzerland was the latest date given when the road and tunnel will(maybe) free for traffic to use at present the date is set for the END of JUNE;A ALTERNATIVE ROUTE HAS BEEN POSTED and is as follows

San Bernadino (Graubünden)
Simplon (Wallis)
Grosser st Bernhard Wallis
Lukrignier Pass Graubünden & Tessin

ALSO take note for those useing the Basel custom point /Border crossing
in JUNE are new rules for the use thereof ,there is onthe site Truck info.ch
all the relevant information, the link to this site is posted inthe opening post on
the Tunnel and its problems .this is well worth visiting and reading as the information given is up to date and will help you from getting caught out and perhaps also stuck in a traffic jam.

The swiss truck info site has a new up date ,the tunnel remains closed
until the rockface has been made safe,On the site are routes given which all trucks may use to bypass the dange area and so get into Italy, this siteis full of good info for the truckdriver.

To make that safe they will have to re-route the road. They were warned before they built it that that part of the mountain was unstable… That Tunnel will be not opening for sometime soon… If those two people hadn`t been killed they would have opened it the day after the rock fall.

brit pete What system is your PC on…? I have friend in Swiss who is Scottish. He was given an old PC. But its all in German. He wants to alter it. Is it possible…?

Harry you have a PM

have justheard more rockfalls this time by stockach at bswiss–german border check the SWISS TRUCKINFO site as this has thelatest info,

i am glad i am not doing shuttles to italy,i bet the traffic is awfull
jon

I just done a swiss transit and got caught with the German holiday too which made Basel Weil am Rhein a no go area.

The train was booked solid, the Brenner was too far round so I ended up going into Italy through the Blanc and out through the Simplon

IT has been posted on the kanton site where the Gothard tunnel is that
the TUNNEL will be OPEN as of 30TH JUNE; unless any unforseen
problem crops up, hope this will please all those who transit the SWISS
for ITALY normaly.
