Well I’ve got a Scania and it doesn’t even have fog lights.
Biggest load of junk I’ve ever driven. Designed for maximum driver discomfort.

i see a couple of birds transport from oldbury running with their driving lamps on regular in the daytime the trucks are brand new r serieis with them new led lamps would these be the new daylight running lights your talking about switchlogic

Well I’ve been running with my lights on day and night for over a decade now, since I first went to Norway and decided it was a good idea. I started using the fogs during the day as I was using headlight bulbs at an impressive rate and after reading in the Scania handbook that they are duel purpose fog/daytime running lights. Wait till next year, or is it year after, when it becomes law for new vehicles to have daytime running lights, plenty for you to moan about then.
Its already in (for cars) Switch since this February.

Further to my rant in “Would you work for this?” in the Euro Driver’ subsection, its yet another law brought here, against the UK’s wishes, by the EU.

I think they are the new running lights Carl. I have seen quite a few foreign Scanias with them on in the day time. Look good i think.
Owned volvo’s and saabs where you couldn’t turn the lights off if you wanted to.
Most modern motorbikes have had the lights come on automatically for last 4yrs or more.
I also drive with my lights on all the time, day or night - NOT my fogs though - after a study many years ago when I worked for First Bus and they discovered that there was 35% less accidents when lights were on all the time.
I’ve always run my motorbikes with the lights on anyway at all times - any extra help etc.
New MAN and Scania trucks have LED lights that you can’t turn off (I think?), but they’re not focus’d beams like fog lights are.
I used to use my ‘driving lamps’ on an old saab I had on country lanes because they gave a good illumination to the sides, but my current car they do bugger all other than look sad.
I put my fog lights on every day…when i do my daily checks
I think ive only used my fog lights for there designated purpose 3 maybe 4 times in the 11 months ive had the motor.
i think containerships run with theres on during the day as well now , maybe company policy as they all seem to have headlights on during the day
i cant see the point running with lights on in the day i think its a case of “look at me in my big truck” with some folk, FFS if you cant see a vehicle up to 50+ feet long 8 feet wide and high as you like in daylight you arnt fit to be driving in the first place!
i think its a ■■■■ idea this daylight running lights crap, motorbikes have done this for years and i think for them its a good idea as it makes them easy to spot in mirrors or at a glance
it’s like hi vis b/s as soon as everyone has em on they wont get noticed anyway its just another poxy idea from the EU w*****s
i just dont see why folk think its a good idea to need lights in the daylight

Did you ever hear somebody saying that they never spotted you coming when they almost ran into you. Your eyes will catch a bright light quicker than the approaching object. Thus letting you see it quicker.
Dipped light should also be on when it’s raining. Its amazing how many people don’t bother.
Dips should also be on when the sun is low in the sky.Did you ever notice how hard it is to see things when a bright sun is low in the sky and behind the on-coming traffic■■?
My answer to all this is not turn them off at all.In the car and in the truck. When I’m in the car at night,a VW Caravelle, I always have the front fogs on too, because with just the dips on there is a huge dark area right in front of the car. Having the fogs on brightens up the area.
Anyway, I’ve rarely had a problem with other vehicles front fogs on when driving. It’s only the very, very occasional one that might be a bit bright. Some of ye lads must have fierce sensitive eyes then.
Oh and I drive a 10 year old Mk1 FH12 with crap dip lights, I wish I had fogs to put on while I’m driving at night
Baz, are you aware that in the UK its an offence to have them on if visibility is greater than 100 metres?
I believe the basic FPN fine is soon going up from £60 to £100 (Eu114).
Ya I know. But personally I don’t have a problem with them at all, day or night. The more people who can see me coming and not run into me the better.
I’ve never had a problem with the law over here regarding the front fogs. But our boys are getting stricter and stricter on the tacho and road side checks etc…
In the 70’s my Dad had a car (Austin 1800) built in 1971, when you put the side lights on, the indicators were dimmed. Wonder what happened to that idea?
[/quote]
Yep, I’ve had 1800’s. They had a relay in the boot, that when you turned on the lights activated a resistor that dimmed the brake lights and rear indicators… a good car that wasn’t developed.

Read that load of rubbish, what is the point of lights on in daylight? I’ve seen a few new motor’s on with them on and rolled my eye’s but after reading that, well I can only think what is the point?!
Have Halford’s had an input into this so they can overcharge people for bulbs even more often?

Agreed.
And strangely enough I had Luke down as the sort of person to drive with his fog lights on the daytime. I would’ve bet money on that. And just in case you’re wondering, yes I think you’re a ■■■■■■ for doing so seeing as there is absolutely no point to it other than the “look at me, I’m cool” factor.
Front fog lights don’t do [zb] anyway for the most part. They’re angled to light up the edges of the road and the area immediately in front of the car, hence why they’re so low to ground, but on a lit road even if it’s foggy they don’t provide you with any extra visibility because there’s already enough light being emitted from the street lighting. They only aid your visibility on foggy unlit roads where your dipped beam doesn’t have the same reach because it reflects back at you on the wall of fog.

I actually agree with Rob here, they only light up the bit between your car and the end of the headlights illuminated area. What use is that? The only time I have found foglights helpful is in thick fog on an unlit road at night. Strange that.

Ooo you called me a ■■■■■■! The lure of the hair worn off has it?
I just happen to think daytime running lights are a good idea, as does all of Scandinavia, Italy, large parts of Eastern Europe and Ireland (not law there but they encourage it). So no need to abuse me old bean, do calm down and stop getting your knickers in a twist over things that don’t really affect you in any way, each to there own.

is that why VOSA cars drive around in daylight with fog lights on
or is it so paddy cant say “sorry didnt see you”
Personally I think daytime running lights are stupid, but thats only because my headlights seem to affect my radio signal. Once thats fixed I think it would be a good idea, if lights are on all the time it stops the problem of people not turning their lights on when its poor visibility.
