Slightly off the normal forum topics
Im off to florida in the new year for my hols, can anyone recomend a good map(s) that I can get to help me navigate my way around the tourist attractions, nuffin too over complicated as I wont be doing the Navigating
I`m stopping in Daytona for the bike week (coz I won a free weeks all expenses paid, inc car etc holiday there)
before someone mentions it, I do have TT N5 on DVD with all euro and US maps but I would prefer to use a paper map. As I don`t want to unload my UK TT maps that I use for work to load the US maps on TT
You can pick up plenty of free maps at the airports m8 which show all the attractions etc. Lucky beggar on winning the weeks holiday, what was the competition?
it wasnt a competition, I went to an event in Faro portugal attended by around 100k biker folks in july http://www.motoclubefaro.pt and part of the 40 euro ticket price included a goody bag which included a couple of raffle tickets 1st prize was a harley type motorcycle, 2nd prize was the holiday for 2 in march to daytona biker week florida. the winning rule was that you **must be present in front of the main stage, when the ticket was drawn,** and the ticket number is called out in several euro languages (inc v.bad english), then you have approx 10 seconds to make your winnig presence know to the organisers, who are up on stage in front of thousands of peeps (with those clothesless laydeeez  ) before they tear up the ticket and re-draw it., the ticket was re-drawn 12 times before mine was called out. (and have ID to match the name on the ticket stub, so you cant claim your mates prize)
I managed to make myself known by running down to the stage waving my arms etc and looking like an hyperactive idiot climbing over loads of security fencing and finally making it onto the stage by the count of of 9 grinning like a cheshire cat. and in shock coz I`m now faced with a Glastonbury size crowd in front of me
Have a nice holiday…Rental car agents have maps…From Orlando airport take the bee-line highway to I 4 east to Daytona Beach, takes about an hour 15 mins. .
Check out the Ocean Deck bar on the beach. Always had a good time in there. .
by the time your ready to come home you will have accumulated more maps than you know what to do with, all of them free.
any publication you pick up with tourist information written on it will have a map in it somewhere.
the rental companies give you a map that will get you out of the airport and towards the highways, make sure you get some coins before leaving the airport in case you end up on a toll road, it’s easier to chuck the coins in the basket than go to a manned booth.
when you get where your going you will find the hotel has tourist books etc and these will have maps in them showing a better road system locally, try to pick up the bus map for daytona, it shows you the bus route but also has a fantastic street map in it.
you can get free internet access at the library, it’s on the a1 and has parking around the back, you get 1 hour free time, it’s ideal for deleting all the crap from your email account before you come home.
make sure you take a drive to st augustine, it’s about 1 hour north towards jacksonville and is a fantastic place with loads of history, it has a couple of english bars, irish bars, spanish, mexican etc. the street shops are really different to the rest of the shopping areas in the us.
there is a ripley’s believe it or not and they have a night time ghost tour that is good fun, there are some other night time ghost tours too but i found the ripleys was a little better.
the market at daytona is massive and if there is something in particular that you are looking for then you should be able to fine it there provided you have the time to walk down all the isles.
the best way to daytona from sanford is to exit the airport and take the first right turn - into sanford itself and then you should pick up the signs for the i4 - the i4 will take you to the i95 and the turn offs for daytona begin straight away, if you are staying in the north of daytona drive past the first 2 exits and come off at the daytona race track exit - if you are central then come off at the first exit or second.
if you need any further info please pm me.
Peirre, I go to Florida almost every year, and do loads of driving while Im there. Any info you require give us a PM.
Have a look at this site www.daytonabeach.com on the left hand side of the homepage there is a box where you can apply for a free guide. This guide is exellent for the Daytona area, has street maps and a comprehensive list of where to go, eat , sleep and drink.
Like others have already said, you’ll pick up free maps of Florida, especially the Orlando area, almost anywhere. Best place I find is in any Walmart entrance.
Which airport are you landing, Orlando Int [MCO] or Sanford â– â–
http://www.mapquest.com Get online and print your maps from address to address. Click the directions icon and it will map routes out from point to point. That’s what most people do around here.
You can buy a Rand McNally’s map book at Walmart for $5 American. It is good for the entire US.
What kind of stuff do you want to go see? NASA is not far from Daytona Beach.
Good luck and enjoy your trip. If you make it towards Missouri or Kansas, give us a shout. We love to have visitors.
