Fleetwood docks

Volvo Fan:
Hi Wheeltapper, I used to work for Pandoro in Leighton Buzzard, used to have a great laugh with the Fleetwood Roamers, Mick Yates, Swivell, Tom Berry and the like. Stoke Roamers aswell, had some good times there.

My dad used to work for Pandoro aswell and was based at the Leighton Buzzard yard, used to go with him when I was a kid to Fleetwood, Stoke & Liverpool.

Pandoro Was one of the best jobs i ever had esp the money… for not a lot of work at all  wasnt there to long tho :frowning:

Very sorry state of affairs in the Uk,i remember it as a busy place, but could see it all going down hill, its so sad as i come from Lancashire and to see it now i dont think it will ever get back to how it used to be!!.

many good times had out of fleetwood esp the reverend mr a fitton and foxy fowler long gone

Oh, my word, what names from the past! Arthur & Jimmy, both characters in their own way, and I enjoyed working with them both at Preston Dock in my latter days at Pandoro.

There was a firm on Fleetwood docks which treated telegraph poles as I can recall delivering a machine there on the 5th June 1970 and when I rung in they told me my wife had been taken into hospital for our youngest and by the time I got back it was all done with and I went straight to the hospital in the wagon just took me boiler suit off and the sister made me get cleaned up and then she brought me a cup of tea before she would allow me in.

cheers Johnnie

I’ve happy memories of Fleetwood sadly it is a shadow of itself.

Calders & Grandidge, Johnnie. They had a place, I forget where, in Lincolnsire too.

Calders were just before you get to Boston , you could smell it a mile away!

I remember Calder and Grandidge,I took creosote in their place for the telegraph poles.

I all.
I worked for Wrights Transpot in there workshops and would do the odd trip to Fleetwood when drivers ran out of time and the trailer need to catch the boat.

Now Bob Wright was Freddy Nickers best mate and he drove for Pandro and I think he was the driver shop steward I think for the drivers?. Then there was Dennis wilks in the transport office.

Regards Peter

Yes, Freddie was one of the shop stewards - I can think of a few more as well. Dennis Wilkes (aka Smoothy) was from Leyland, and had migrated from Northern Ireland Trailers, along with most of the traffic staff at Fleetwood.

Here’s one of Wright’s Atkis in the compound at Fleetwood:

If any one is interested there is now an album on Flickr by Chris Farnah containing many images taken at the Pandoro depot at Fleetwood Docks.
The picture above is one of many which, thanks to Chris, can be found here > Pandoro Album

John McVey:
I was there yesterday, it’s all been demolished now, hard to believe the queues of lorries that trailed down Dock Street and on to Copse Road before the new Road was built late 70s early 80s. I was there 17 years, 8 as traffic foreman, all those nights and afternoons in that building on Dock Street that no longer exists. I don’t miss the Atki Borderer though Mr 240!

That cold Lager you used to have at night so we could all see it was cruel, & then the drive back to Buzzard.

Now that’s a proper sheeted load. I assume the driver’s gone off for a bit more rope to finish off the front end.
