flat batterys

i woke up this morning with and waggon was dead the only thing i can think that caused this was leaving the coolbox on overnight i have done it before with no problem but i just got this one and it has a 24v hella plug on it if i change it for a 12v lead will i be able to run it through the night and not kill the batterys
the only other thing i can think that i had on that night was my 12v inverter and that was only for 2 hrs max while i charged the laptop

The first sign of coldish weather normally shows up any weak batteries. Time for a change.

u mean change batterys in waggon its an 11 plate scanny should not need changing yet shurley :open_mouth:

Well stranger things have happened, if one of the batteries have gone duff the other is useless. I wouldn’t have thought a coolbox, even 24v would drain the batteries on it’s own just overnight - maybe add nightheater, radio, coffee maker, lights etc, they all add up.

My 59 plate Renault is having problems as well.
After overnight stop,wouldn’t start Tuesday morning,called out a jump-start.
Only just started this morning!
Def time for a workshop visit…

Even Scania batteries fail

spoke to a mate of mine he says change the lead on the cool box for a 12v and when finished with inverter run the engine for 5 mins after and should be ok

thats what i couldnt understand as i only had the coolbox running the heaters were set to come on in the orning and thats it

Surely its best for the coolbox to be running on 24v as its drawing less amps that way?

Cold weather is sure to find a weak battery/batteries.
Renew as a pair.

The battery that is 1st inline from the positive lead is generally the one that drains quicker and loses power from my experience.

It`s either time to renew your batteries or carry a jumper pack just in case , or carry a breakdown call out number, the choice is yours .

luckily anything like this happens i just ring office and they sort it :sunglasses:

laptop and an inverter will pull batteries down in two or three hours. one dvd will flatten weak ones

I would say that was abit over the top, the starting of the engine would take more power than running it for 5 mins would generate.

That advice is pretty much guaranteed to increase your battery problems. Running the cool box on 12v instead of 24v will double the current it is drawing and you will take more out of the batteries starting the truck than 5 minutes running will put back in.

The laptop will draw less if you have it fully charged then use the inverter to run it, keeping at full charge, rather than letting it go flat then charging it back up.

Also, is it the 1000w inverter from the other thread you are talking about? If you have got a 1000w inverter for running your laptop that is overkill, a 24v 150w inverter will be more than enough for that and far kinder to the batteries.

The truck I was allocated would not start yesterday,
I left the side lights on because I was in the back offloading
and I think it is safe to leave sidelights on when tipping in the dark

As a previous poster said the cold weather finds out a weak battery.

Just be very carefull off “jump starting” modern trucks , a lot off eletrics to blow !
We was warned against doing it to our actros’s incase we blow the gearbox etc !
Altho when we do call MERC out all they do is the same ! But I suppose if they blow anything they pay for it .

Jumping them is no problem as long as you do it the ‘right’ way as recommended by most, if not all, of the manufacturers. Don’t connect the black cable to the negative terminal on the battery, connect it to the chassis instead.

But then the manufacturer trained fitters come out and connect the cables to the battery anyway. :stuck_out_tongue:

It’s a common problem clifton! When your logged off you can run the engine for more than a minute you know?
The 58 Scania I had,the batteries went flat after nine hours with just the night heater running in thecold weather in Scotland! As said above! Scania have 2 batteries and if one is a dud the other is as good as useless!! :unamused:

■■? Doesn’t every one

you can get jump leads with an anti surge device fitted…we had to get a set years back after toasting the gaffers bmw ecu!..takes out the voltage spikes that damage ecus and the like.
