Yes but then someone would call the fire brigade who would not be available because they were rescuing some muppett from the dizzy heights of a tail lift.

Its totally pathetic, the latest incident from the tail-lift queen was someone from the store approaching them to ask them how long they were going on break for, the reply was “you’ve disturbed my break i’ll have to start again”

A certain company could do with sitting back and taking a long hard look at itself, particular its recruitment policy.

Mike that precious ballerina must embarrass the rest of you.

To right, we have a good number of drivers apart for this particular driver who’s attitude, ability, and all round work ethic totally stinks.

I’m old school and have no time whatsoever for this behavior and the majority of my colleagues are the same, it’s pitiful to watch them, they know every trick in the book and use them whenever it suits them, wont do this wont do that and when the management do start to lean on them off they run to find a union rep or the defect book.

And because they know all the rules its almost impossible to get rid of them.

I have a mate from Sheffield who used to keep a leyland freighter on his fleet just for those he wanted rid of ,it worked well .

When I worked in a Tesco store there were a handful of drivers like this who were infamous across all the local stores. They knew this and I think they enjoyed the celebrity status and felt although they had to live up to it.

One fella refused an entire reload of recycling because of one the cardboard cages had some plastic in it. He took off the 10 cages already loaded and went away empty. Said he can’t take back a contaminated load. He came back the next day and refused to turn around in the yard because the recycling had now overflowed into the ‘designated turning circle’ on the risk assessment a little bit (still acres of space, we had an enormous yard). He then refused the recycling again because it had been raining so it was now wet, so again ‘contaminated’. This fella got reported many times, but nothing was ever done. In the end an empty vehicle had to come out specially and collect the backlog.

Yes, we have the odd one but thankfully few, though i lay 99% of the blame directly at management’s door for allowing them to flourish.

These idiots didn’t suddenly turn into sullen incompetent little mincers @ 2 years and 1 day, or even on the 14th week after commencing employment there, within 2 or 3 weeks of arrival the warning signs are there, if poor management can’t do whats necessary to weed out these people while its still relatively simple to get rid then more fool them, management are solely to blame when these fools go from bad to worse…and often their idiotic bad apple attitude rubs off on some of the other staff and before you know it you’ve got a real problem.

IMO there’s more to management than enjoying the kudos of the title/company car/salary package, there’s a responsibility to everyone else there and too many don’t take their responsibilities seriously and the rest of the workforce suffer.

I call it dumbing down syndrome, where everyone has to be trained down to the level of the half wit (insulting as that is to the vast majority of decent staff, shades of DCPC anyone) instead of training up the half wits to the level of the more competent staff or getting shot of them if untrainable.

What makes this doubly frustrating is that far too often these companies offer leading terms and conditions and should be cherry picking the cream of the crop only.

:unamused: i really would love to say on here what im thinking but i know i will end up in trouble

I cant believe what utter [zb] im reading here thank god i have a fleet of proper drivers what a disgrace

I’m not condoning the fire brigade being called out, I’d have personally found a way to get down of my own accord. But if your saying thank god you have a “fleet of proper drivers” would you be paying them full sick pay for months if they were off with a broken ankle after jumping from a raised tail lift??

Just curious as judging by your post your a transport manager at the very minimum

Fair play, you sound like someone who let’s their drivers use some common sense to get the job done, the type of people the op is talking about are the type of people who have made working for a lot of companies a H/S minefield where every part of the job is clogged up with stupid rules and regs.

I wasn’t saying you were a tm, was guessing that was the minimum you were, I take it you own your own company??

One quite straightforward solution would have been to wire the down button on the tail-lift to bypass the battery guard so even if it trips the tail lift will still lower one last time.

That’s just too simple for management to understand. The decision on this Battery guard probably went up to boardroom level, they either chose the cheaper wrong product or failed to ensure that the product which would do the job was correctly installed. There are systems on the market which will either reset after a delay or bypass to allow the tail lift to lower.

The battery guards disable the anderson connector, which is 2 cables (+24v and -24v)

It would be a bit harder than it seems to “Hardwire” the down control as it would need a separate power supply just for the down control

I think an alarm on the cab would be better than a device to totally kill the tail lift power supply, or at least an early warning alarm before the power is killed.

Usually the battery guard goes in the tail-lift pump casing. You would just need a relay and the down switch wired in before the guard. If the battery guard was put before the anderson plug on the unit then it would need more thought but still be doable the down operation is a small current draw so some rechargeable power source could easily be incorporated into the tail-lift I would probably go for a massive electrolytic capacitor.

Another option would be an emergency down handle that used the air supply to actuate the hydraulic valve on the lift. One thing for certain is it would definitely be possible to design a system, not relying on a warning bleeper, that ensured a driver didn’t get stuck on the lift and that scenario ought to have been foreseeable.

Leave the unit running and lock it with a spare key…

We had a character like this once. I went out with him for a day as I couldn’t believe the stories I was hearing.

He lasted a week afterwards.

I must be a health and safety nightmare. I jump on and off tail lifts, in and out of the back of wagons. Hell sometimes I can be seen on the wagon bed directing forkies, maybe if I’m feeling really naughty I don’t wear my Hi-Vis!

I took a DD to a store in a pouplar West Country holiday area last night and got talking to the kid in the back door and he did infact confirm that the Fire Brigade issued a fine of 700 pounds. So I’m guessing that’s where the incident occurred

Also something about a complaint being made that the scissor lift was to loud because it hurt said drivers delicate ears.
He has also heard stories of the worlds best lorry driver so we had a right giggle tipping that one
