Flashing came about when most roads were single carage, I do it ,well why not it is a : now then or your clear to bring her in you know polite or something. Some good practice has gone by the wayside ie not give way to loaded vehicle uphill, I dont think the new breed of driver has the road craft of the older generation,it may have been lost in the way they were shown new ideas ect and daft ones at that,…;;;‘’’
My dad got flashed by a woman in a softop a few years bacj;It looked like she had a bear trappers hat between her legs dad recalls…

I had been off trucks for a few years and noticed a difference coming back to haulage
previously it had been very rare in my experience for a truck not to flash or acknowledge you
when passing times seem to have changed.I see flashing in as part of the cameraderie of the road , …
… knights of the road , it’s not always
easy to stick to this but nearly always it is a pleasureenjoy your journey
glencarron
its a pity other fellow “professionals” dont have the same view , a bit of courtesy goes along way !
Totally agreed,
Its a shame that Some so called Professional drivers do not know the Highway code re overtaking
Well said Glencarron
I only passed my test last year, on my first night drivIng Class 2 an artic was passing me on a duel carraigeway, it had been raining but had stopped, as he went past the spray was covering my screen so I put on the wipers but in my haste I accidentally flashed too he/she started to move over
as I jumped on the brakes the trailer pulled literally inches from my front end, the driver blinked his indicators to say thanks oblivious to the fact he very nearly killed me (or worse)
my pants were discarded rather quickly
seriously it made me sit and wonder if the job was actually worth it?
Love the job now so I’m glad it didn’t put me off ( it nearly did)

Sorry to hear of your wee accident It can happen, Just hope you learnt from the incident and will ensure next time you are more accustomed to your controls, thankfully you made a quick rectifying action which stopped the incident becoming more serious
Yes I have learnt from it, now every time a truck starts to overtake me I just pull over on to the hard shoulder put hazards on dive under the bunk and shake like a ■■■■■■■■ dog until the nasty noise has passed
Simple really
Has anyone failed their driving test for not flashing someone in?

Where does it mention flashing the headlights in relation to overtaking?
You could also say it’s a shame so called professional drivers don’t know the Highway Code re flashing of headlights.

Dont hold back mate tell it like it is
As above, when I’m driving my 6.5 ton van I can’t understand why artics flash me in (daytime).
If you can’t tell how far away the back of a van is from the front, you shouldn’t be driving it.
Conversely, when it’s hossing down with rain and I’m driving the wrecker with an artic on the hook at night, that flash in can be a god send. Not that I can’t judge my position myself, rather just a ‘second opinion’!
And I do aknowledge, if my light board works

Haha, done the same thing myself, 40’ flat overtook me with steel beams on. He got just past and he was flying so I gave him a flash. He started pulling in, that’s when I clocked the extra long beam in the centre of the load, hanging 10’ over the end of the trailer
Hiya…untill 1960 there was no rule to have a mirror on the near side and only one wiper…
so the idea was when someone overtook you in the dark a flash of the headlights lit up
the road making the driver aware he had passed the slower lorry. this seemed to carry on
in daylight hours when mirrors was introduced on the near side. you must remember there was no motorways in these days plus the speed limit was 20 mph…it seems hard to think that it was hard
going to overtake a 20 mph lorry.not knocking any younger drivers but many of them have never
drove a lorry that only did 34 MPH … some of these lorries was still on the roads untill 1970.
can you imanige going from Stoke to Glasgow at that speed no heater no radio…wow
it did happen…
