fixed term

why do companies offer 6 months fixed term contracts, do they get extended, or is it goodbye after 6 months

Is the job seasonal?

I worked for a plant producer and due to people only wanting to buy plants between March-Sept there was very few of us full time all year, 5 of us on nights were full timers and the other 20+ were on 6 month deals and none were ever kept on.

it doesnt look seasonal, warburtons delivering bread i think

Maybe demand rises and falls? Either way you gotta get the dough and make sure you earn a crust in those six months.

A way of avoiding giving security to long term employees?
New employees can be hired and fired at will can’t they? Longer term not.
OR maybe they want a business model where the drivers just get to know the job when they’re thrown out??
Maybe they want employees who have no interest in the long term good of the company??
Maybe the management are a bunch of ####ers■■

May be it ties in with the lease etc on the trucks. If they have various drivers on fixed contracts starting and ending on different dates if work dries up then they off load the drivers and send the trucks back very easily. Drivers are just a commodity to use as they see fit, that’s life now.

Just as bad as agency’s if at same place for 12 weeks they have to give you same term conditions as somone who works there…
I was at one place years ago did 11 weeks .
Was multisrop. Was just getting into it knew where places were better what procedures were was getting around drops quicker. After 11 weeks was told wasn’t needed there anymore.
So I leave they then take on somone else who’s doeasnt know the route . So he’s slow unsure. Just as he’s getting upto speed with it all they get rid of him and repeat.
Surley be easier.find somone reliable and keep them.there as long as possible. And cheaper

I’d say it so they can take you on then don’t have to give you the full /same terms as someone permenat. So probably no sick pay or rights etc
And if you turn out to be useless unreliable they can easily get rid of you.
Where as if you was taken on permenat then they later found out you was useless . Be harder for them get rid of you.

I would say it’s this. It’s effectively an extended trial period. Mess up or mess them about your released with no issue. Do a good job and probably a decent chance of getting in permanent.

I would expect the same rights as permeant staff though as you will be employed. However a lot of those rights may have a qualifying period.

It’s worth asking what the chances are of it being extended.

theyre advertising for class 1 as well but no mention of fixed term on the class 1. in fact i think it says 6 week induction

This is exactly what happens to me every Winter, after 11 weeks on any assignment I am taken off of it, normally the reason given by the agency is “their work has gone quiet” or “they’ve lost a contract”, but I can tell just by the tone of voice over the phone that they are lying.

It never bothers me, it just means I go off boating a few weeks earlier than planned, but I do wonder at the logic of it, especially as my wages and terms are at least equal to the client’s employed drivers, and I’ve heard some horror stories about other drivers the agency have sent them in the past.

Still, it is what it is. :stuck_out_tongue:
