Fitting a mid lift axle

I’m looking at fitting a mid lift axle to a 2006 Daf xf 480 spacecab, just wondering if anyone has done this and what are the best options?
Thinking of buying a secondhand small wheeled axle and reconditioning it as a cheaper option than buying a new one as the tuck is 7 years old now I don’t want to spend a fortune.

1- Anyone know where I could get a good secondhand axle.
2- Would it be better to move the batteries and airtanks on the passenger side and move the fuel tank forward or just make the tank smaller.
3- Roughly what should it cost.

I know someone is going so suggest to sell the truck and buy a midlift tractor unit, but I have this truck from new and it’s only got 450,000 kms on it and never given any trouble so I think it’s better to spend the money on converting a truck that I know than trading it for a secondhand one that could be trouble.Buying new is not an option at the moment.

Whould there be enough of a wheelbase to fit a midlift axle on a 2 axle tractor unit ?

Go with a lift tag, shove the drive forward a bit and add to the rear, they’re a lot more maneuverable, better in the snow as well.
Watch the wheel base, if you get the front axle to close to the drive/ bogie then the weight limit drops a bit. It used to be 22 ton instead of 24. I’m not sure what the exact measurements are but they shouldn’t be to hard to find.
When you’re getting quotes for a job like that you should get an exact answer straight away, if the guy is humming and haing then he probably hasn’t done one before and isn’t sure about the job, could end up being a ■■■■ up. Try and find a truck that has a similar set up and ask the driver who did it.
You might have to get a shorter fuel tank, and mover things round on the chassis like batteries and air tanks, possibly carry the spare on the trailer or just dump it if you’re on with on of the road side recovery mobs.
Tag or midlife you shouldn’t be looking at any more than a week, including new paperwork.

probably cheaper to sell it and buy one with a midlift fitted

I know of a guy round me who buys 4x2 Scania units and sends them to an axle engineering place near Stoke where they fit the axle and move the air/fuel tanks and batteries accordingly. Might be worth a search in google?

Mr Quinn by any chance?

Your best bet is to talk to one of the specialists, getting it all to work properly including things like ABS/EBS and so on is a specialist job and if you go to one of the big boys then they will have done the same thing dozens of times before and know straight away what is and what isn’t possible.

Yes Paul. Nice bloke I met him a few weeks ago while doing a Ward/Pearson job. No hesitation to give advice and a really approachable guy. Pleasure to know we still have good guys in the industry!

Aye, he’s definitely one of the good guys and never short of something to say! I noticed his 55 plate Scania for sale in Comical Motor a couple of months back but I’ve not spotted the replacement on the road yet.

He put an 08 Scania on the road in February which he was driving when I spoke to him so maybe that’s what replaced it?

Matt.
