First start with no experience!

Hi everyone,

I signed up to this forum a while back and have been reading for a while and gathered a lot of really useful info, and had a good laugh to boot! I haven’t posted yet as I didn’t really have anything of value to add so far. But things changed today!

I am just about to leave the RN and decided that driving would not be a bad career choice. I had my licenses paid for by the mob back in 2007 so I jumped on the DCPC/ADR course run by the career transition partnership and paid for some refresher training.

Well I have no commercial experience so for the last 8 weeks I have suffered a multitude of knock backs! The usual conversation goes like this;

Its great your ex forces we would love to employ you, oh you have no commercial experience, mm really sorry but it’s a no go!

But as it has been stated on here perseverance is the key! I kept applying for everything regardless of the advert saying 2 years experience and yes I did “annoy” some office staff when the experience question came up at interviews or on the phone, oh well! But yesterday I had a phone call to arrange an interview for a fuel distribution company so I suggested today.

Interview lasted 10 mins and I was offered the job! :smiley: :smiley: :smiley: :smiley: It may be only a seasonal job but its def taken the pressure off me! I start in just over a week, site induction next week and a driving assessment on the same day. But HR are already sending out my offer of employment! Let’s just hope that I don’t screw the assessment up like a true Muppet! Then 2 weeks training with the companies driver assessor and then I will be let loose so to speak!

So the moral of the story is if it what you want to do and you’re like me new to the job, send out CV’s lots, visit the haulage companies and leave your CV with them. Apply for everything you can find irrespective of experience, someone somewhere will need a driver, so stick at it and don’t get disheartened!

I will keep you all updated, but to everyone on here thanks for the info, help and keeping me smiling!

J

Chuffed things are looking up for you now:-) perseverance is needed to succeed, well done:-)
