First opportunity - need advice

Hiya, has anyone worked for Palmer & Huntley out of their Haydock depot? Finally got an opportunity to get out on the road and do some real work, (well 1 day a week anyway. It’s a start). They’re going to send me out with someone who knows the ropes but I’m a bit nervous as I haven’t driven for about 3 months and you know what it’s like walking into somewhere completely new so I was wondering if anyone could give me any helpful hints, advice etc. I’m really looking forward to it but a bit nervous at the same time. Thanks.

I assume you’ve been honest with them about your level of experience. Just take your time. You’ll be fine.

What will you be driving? If you have a Class2 it’ll more than likely be newsagents / garage forecourt deliveries with wheeled trollies full of sweets and tobacco products.

Thanks for getting back to me. Yes, I have been honest with them and I am grateful for the opportunity. The transport manager I spoke to seems a genuine guy and it’s good of him to give me a chance. I don’t want to let them down. Can’t wait to get out there.

Good luck. Let us know how it goes

Thank you. I will x

Think yer in there dar.

Mate ive been working with my first opportunity for about 2 months now and I drive everyday and I still get nervous now if I know im going places that are tricky its totally normal to be nervous and its evan a good thing if you wasnt nervous you would go out like a bat out of hell and thats when you make mistakes as people have said take it steady get yourself back into it… if you get into a tight situation STOP, THINK, then REACT dont worry if your blocking traffic they would rather be held up for a few minutes while you get out and look at the space behind you other than you just guessing in a rushed panic and hitting there car trust me ive done it… good luck if youve got any questions P/M me and ill try and help but other than that take the nerves as they advice you and just enjoy having the opportunity its great when you get into it

If your not sure about anything , Ask someone, don’t assume that every thing is ok on your vehicle, Do your checks, watch your blind spot on the roads, remember the dimensions of the vehicle, both on & off the road ! Hope all goes well for you ,

Thank you for the support everyone. Much appreciated. I’ll let you know how I get on. Starting in May. x
