First Job Application & First Rejection

Applied to Brakes - application rejected :frowning:

I have passed Cat C, I have my digital tacho but I have not done DCPC yet - although I have it booked in (and paid for) for this month - maybe that put them off or maybe they are after experienced drivers?

I think I will wait before I apply for any more jobs and see what happens when I take the C+E test at the beginning of August, I have prepared two batches of twenty CV’s and cover notes, one batch for Class 2 work; just in case I fail C+E, another batch for progression onto Class 1 work if I pass - hopefully it’s the latter  Failing that I will be hitting the agencies… … failing that I will be selling the wife’s kidney. :unamused:

Could be a blessing in disguise, not getting Brakes. Bloody hard work and you get loads of grief off customers and members of the public. Something will come your way mate. Keep going.

You’re not employable without your CPC bud.

Would they have not took into consideration that it was booked in for the next couple of weeks - it’s not as if there are any exams attached to the course?

Cheers

I can’t see any company looking at you if there are alternative candidates ready to run. So don’t take it as a rejection pal, just get your CPC done and go knock some doors.

Best of luck pal!

Cheers - will do

And as The Beaver said, Brakes (and Bidvest, 3663, Fresh Direct etc) is bloody killer work.

One tip for you fella, don’t rule out 7.5t work. If you can get on a company that runs bigger stuff too, it’s amazing how quickly they’ll give you a chance when someone is on holiday, or rings in sick.

I remember my old boss telling me not to do my class 2 on his account, as he had far more than enough drivers on the books.

Within 3 weeks I was driving brand new motors, and within 6 months I’d got my own.

Now on class 1 and earning more than that ■■■■!

Yea mate,

Same as above posts, I’m actually starting in a 7.5t for a month coz they offered me it, and I ripped their arm off lol! It’s always a good starting block to gain experience, and not see it as a step down, aka passed in a cat c lorry and get put in a 7.5 for a bit.

Chin up mate :sunglasses:

Cheers for the tips

I would prefer to gain some experience on Class 2 before stepping up to Class 1 - but ultimately it is Class 1 that I am aiming for so targeting the firms with both Class 1 and 2 trucks is great advise.

My ideal job would be working a 4 on 4 off system, with some nights out included, although I fully expect jobs meeting this criteria to be difficult to find.

It used to be the case that people like to see C+E for around 2 years on your license before the better jobs become ‘available’. If this is still the case (others can say) then getting your C+E while you can still remember how to pass the test is to be encouraged. Apart from the reverse, the drop/catch and even more frenzied mirror checking, it’s essentially exactly the same test on exactly the same routes you learned, with actually slightly less time driving forwards!
So if you can afford it, I would actually encourage you to get on with it, and start the ‘experience’ clock ticking, then in a couple of years you will be on the big boys toys

As others have said that’s not a rejection buddy. It’s an office ticking a box…

Valid CPC? - Yes/No (they don’t have a tick for “will have soon”)

Just put the applications on hold until you have everything an employer wants you to have!!

All the best.

Definitely. ^^

Strike while the iron is hot, and all that. Don’t wait until you’re in a dead end job, that you hate, and can’t fund class 1.

If funds allow, get it out of the way.

A company literally 5 minutes from my front door with a really good reputation in these parts, suddenly got a new transport manager, who took one look at his bill for agency drivers every week, and thought “fork this for a lark”

He decided to give newbies a chance, and give them full access to the company trainer to help them out with anything they weren’t confident with.

I’d had my class 1 for 27 months and hadn’t even sat in an artic since my test, one week after my interview, I had my very own MAN TGX 440 XXL, did a days induction on the company policies and paperwork, and another doing real world reverses (the thing that had stopped me taking the jump) on my 3rd day off I trotted down to Dartford, needed a 45 at South Mimms (great fun for a first ever solo reverse on a Friday afternoon)

I had been relatively happy in my old Class 2 job, but continually moving goalposts, and being first man in the yard on a Monday morning and last man out on a Friday night, started to get my goat.

I was in a rush one afternoon, and went to “kick off” at the TM, but didn’t have time to vent my spleen, so just told him I wanted a word with him, in private, and he’d best be ready to free up an hour of his time.

I later found out that he was watching me on my tracker, and going for lunch/home/generally making himself scarce as soon as I got 10 minutes from the yard.

Oh well. I’ll earn at least 5k more than him this year, and I’ll get 8 days more holiday! [emoji3]

And a last tip, never trust anyone who tells you that they’ll put you through your class 1, just won’t happen.

Don’t turn your nose up at brakes/3663 bidvest etc, yes it’s hard work, but pays well for new to the industry drivers, and you will get a chance, just need your cpc card! If your not afraid of a it of graft, at least to start with then they are the way to go, or look for a sub £22k job for noobs, personally I’m taking the £30+ on offer at 3663 and start in a few weeks!

Each to there own!

Each to there own!

Yeah mate go for it!

Everyday is an experience

Thanks all, I think the best course of action will be to wait and see what is on offer then make a decision based on that. I’m not scared of a bit of hard work and whilst the money is important it’s not going to be the only consideration.
