First Delivery job monday

Hey all i passed my class 2 about 8 months ago and got a job with Birmingham city council driving class 2 dustcarts so im tacho exempt anyway im trying to get away from waste managenent and get into the delivery side of things as im doing my class 1 next month… anyway ive had a phone call from one of my agencies today and ive agreed to work on one of my rest days next week doing a run for Hooties its palletised work 3 drops for the day… the only things im worried about is its my first time on digi tacho my first time carrying pallets and my first time dropping a load of any value in a shop/depo environment ANY TIPS OR ADVICE PLEASE im a little nurvous lol

Just because you are tacho exempt on the dustcarts, You will still be under the WTD for Mobile Workers. You should still be careful of your weekly rest periods.

Take it easy with pallets on board. It’s not quite as forgiving as a box full of household waste.

Have a look at videos on curtainsiders and how to secure them.

The tacho heads are fairly self explanatory. If you get stuck, ask one of the other drivers around or the TM. Explain it’s your first time using one.

Thanks for the reply dar1976 yh I know Im under WTD and domestic driving hours and I do obey them its more the interface of the digi tacho I just want to be sure that im doing it right thats all… and I will check some videos about the curtain siders thats a very good point and if I do get stuck with anything I will find someone to ask… thanks for the post mate

Driving a vehicle loaded with rubbish is one thing-driving a vehicle loaded with pallets is another.
The rubbish doesn’t matter if it gets thrown about.
The pallets on the other hand will be worth money & could be fragile & top heavy.

First of all try to make sure that you load it with two pallets side by side ( ie 2-4-6-8 pallets) any odd pallets need to be as low as possible. Then you need to use internal straps to secure them.
If you’ve got an odd high pallet put it against the other pallets or the head board (that takes care of forward/braking forces) strap it using spansets/ratchet straps (internals probably won’t work,as they might not even touch the pallet)
Pallets should be shrink wrapped or banded (depends on the goods)
Anything heavy needs to be ratchet strapped to the bed ie concrete drainage channels or metal drain covers (stuff we carry)
Normal Palletline type pallets are usually ok with internal straps. If they are really light & could get damaged with straps, the curtains should be ok (but I didn’t say that !)

Don’t drive it the same as you drive the dustcart - like Lewis Hamilton ! (I drove waste wagons for more than 10 years, so I know what waste drivers are like) job & finish & all that !
Take it steady, roundabouts 2nd or 3rd gear, tickling the throttle/not pushed through the floor ! Don’t throw it around on the bends trying to touch the road with your door handles !

I know this might seem extreme ! But when you get to your first drop only 3 miles down the road, if you decided to race there, & open the back door/curtains you will have 8 hours of exercise hand balling the load back onto the pallets (what fun !) that’s if they don’t reject the load !

Good luck & let us know how you get on.
