First day tomorrow, an I'm Terrified

Bless you all, truly grateful to have found this place [emoji482][emoji482][emoji41][emoji41]

Some superb points raised, and on board, and some interesting fodder to Ponder too, again all hugely welcomed and massively appreciated [emoji109][emoji109]

I’ve walked life with the mantra of pride before a fall, I’ve cleaned bogs for 3ph so prides last of my worries lol, it’s more just don’t want to have a guide for a bit and hold them up, everyone’s got lives to lead and I don’t want to be that guy, even though I am being ffs, either way I’m going to head in for my start, if nothing else I tried and as said above by one of the contributions made, maybe I’m not meant to be but if I don’t go, well I’ll never know.

I got marked down hard on test for basically being to curtious/cautious it’s just how I am in life, I’m either on or off, nice or not, Marmite basically, couple that with my mental fannyness and boom here’s this thread [emoji20]

Can See why now me step dad always sang if he had a hammer at me… [emoji38] [emoji20][emoji849]

Fml…
Knew I should of taken the modeling job for the braille times [emoji57]

You have done enough to pass the test so you cant be that bad with road positioning and roundabouts, just take the room you feel you need at the roundabout and slow enough on the approach so the impatient car drivers ■■■■ off from behind you, and basically take it easy. Literally do learn something new everyday. And as robroy said, a bit of blagging and acting like you been doing it for years goes well. I been driving class 1 for 2 years, last year started doing european work, blagged it enough to get given my first run, got off the boat in caen and straight on the phone to a older driver who been doing it years, a lot of laughter off him, then a lot of guidance/advice, 2wks later back on english soil and no problems from the trip. As juddian said, when it comes to entering sites, let the people on the gatehouse know you haven’t been before, no one wants to go the wrong way around a oneway

Might also sound a bit strange now, but let us know where your run is taking you tomorrow, someone on here may of been before and could give you some tips on it, and google earth it as well, just so you know roughly where your going and almost what to expect it to look like.

Thanks bud, to be honest…

I’ve NO idea.

Won’t know until I arrive, hopefully as I’m on day work for the week it will be something challenging, which I really do want so long as whoever I have with me is up for dealings with a noob while I do it [emoji52]

I want to succeed at this, but sadly i do Need that confidence from others to do so…

…and if you are asked to perform a manoeuvre that you don’t think you’re up to - don’t attempt it out of pride. Just say: “I can’t do that.” With a bit of luck, there might be another driver around who’ll help you out.
Don’t take any chances at all. That’s the part where you have to man-up as a new driver. It takes courage to swallow your pride, ignore the embarrassment and just say: “No. Just passed my test and that reverse is something I cannot do yet. Sorry mate. The forklift will have to come to ME.”
Everything else is just driving from here to there and back again - carefully; take your time and do it right. It’s not a race. Build a reputation for being safe and reliable. All that’s left is to turn the radio up and chill. Every driver everywhere has been through what you’re going through. And you’ve passed your test so you’re at least as good as them.

SuperMultiBlue:
Just remember the truck is a lot bigger than you think. One wrong turn down the wrong road and you are bang in trouble. The pressure will really be on and the timer counting down until the police are called.

No it’s not. I am sure he won’t take a wrong turn and get into trouble. Your advice stinks.

Listen, he has passed his test and he needs to learn. The only way to do that is by practice and not by giving up before any attempt. As long as time is taken and plenty observation there should be no problem.

Not really Jake, it’s sound advice, if a bit brutal.
It’s probably the number one rookie mistake, following satnav down unsuitable roads.
Best that this is fresh in his mind, and the consequences of it.

As for the OP, don’t worry mate, all will come naturally.
Any problems at any site just explain you are new, people will help.
Out on the road you are on your own but use your head and take it slow.
Good luck

None of us were born with a HGV license we all had a first day behind the wheel.Tomorrow you will be thinking at the end of your shift what on earth was i worried about. Post on here how you got on bet you say it went better than you thought.

Slow and steady wins the race.

Best advice for new starter is nice and slow and avoid all distractions as much as possible.
Ie try not to listen to music wear headphones or check social media. Ignore any phone calls etc.
Just concentrate on your driving getting familiar with your truck.
If going long diatance. Take 5 mims.to study a map see where your going get an idea.

Above all keep calm concentrate on driving ignore any idiots on the road.
And above all.Don’t fully trust your sat nav. If it says turn left check there’s space no parked cars plenty of room.
Don’t just turn a corner then hope for the best.

To be honest your be fine I imagine your get more worried about your hours breaks etc than anything else

Chaps right, but one thing I’ve always done is look before I leap…and I DONT rely on sat navs, I trust my gut, but he’s right as I’ve said basically the same above with regards to holding folks up,.

Sadly it’s gone full circle into pure fear now [emoji57]

And as always thank you all so much over the months for all the help/advice/pm’s/ and ridicule it’s is all hugely appreciated, respected, embraced and owed at the bar.

Sadly stobbies won’t let me display a name plate in cab(snowflake be mine [emoji38]) so I’m putting P plates on trailer, so if you see it…

Its me [emoji24][emoji20][emoji22][emoji38][emoji38]

Dont rush for anyone. Not the forkie at the delivery point. Not the planner in the office. Not the supertrucker in the blinged up fancy cab behind you.

If you’re not sure, get out and look (obviously motorways are excepted in that one!) Reversing, get out and look. Backing onto a bay, get out and look. Not sure of the road, get out and look. As I told one impatient individual who didn’t like me stopping my lorry and walking down a side street to check, " everyone will be held up a lot longer if this goes ■■■■ up".

Ask questions. Ask at the delivery point where they want you and how to get there. Ask your planner if theres anything you need to know about your run (or who to ask if theres anything you need to know about your run). Ask other drivers, your colleagues will probably have done every job you’ll be asked to do already. Ask drivers you dont know, lorry drivers love to share our wealth of experience! (Normally whether its asked for or not).

Most of all, enjoy. You’ve earnt this.

Sadly it’s gone full circle into pure fear now

Ha, I wonder why. Not the best advice in my opinion for your first day but it’s more than obvious you are switched on enough and unlikely to get into any trouble.
As others have said. ENJOY.

Lol Mr jake it were like this before the advice…[emoji849][emoji57][emoji20][emoji23]

End of day it’s all down to me, if I ■■■■ it up, its on my arse ain’t it, no point in sugar coating it was I think his point, ■■■■ goes wrong so be prepared to try and avoid it.

Again thank you all so much, your legends the lot of you [emoji109][emoji109][emoji482][emoji482][emoji41][emoji41]

I’ve half dozen ratchets round me whilst I attempt to sleep now, if they don’t work by 4am then they will atleast stop me leaving the house [emoji108][emoji38]

Once more into the frey I go it seems…
