After a couple of weeks of getting jobs from the agency working as a drivers mate, I had my first day out driving by myself driving for P and H. Although it was a long day as expected, for the most part of the day was going very well and 9 out of the 10 stores I delivered to were very helpful and understanding of it being my first day on the job. Even had an off duty P and H driver help me make the drop at a Sainbury’s forecourt, so I left the day feeling the best I have done for a long time at work.
When I got back home and looking at my print out I spotted by rookie mistake, I saw that when I was taking my second break due to the 6 hour total working rule, I forgot to set the tachograph to break from other work. After making the delivery came from the nice staff at the petrol station saying I can leave the truck on the forecourt and use their staff room.
So I am guessing I need to make an adjustment to the print to show my error here, and the break I did take. What the best/right way of doing this? As well as, on the side what’s the best way to deal with straps which do not loosen, other then using a large metal pole from the One Stop store to force the strap loose?
I’d just forgot about that infrigemnet personally. Its not a driver hour one and thats the DVSA care about. For struck ratchets, WD40.

Thank you, it’s good to know about the hours, and I will pick up some WD40 later for next time.
You could always just do a couple of printouts. And wright on the back with an explanation…One for you to keep and one to hand in…Problem sorted…

I wouldn’t worry about the infringement, If it’s anything like the agency I work for with P&H they’ll send something for you to sign and that will be it.
I tend to cut the straps If I can’t get them undone, the lorries always seem to have plenty lying in the back and if not I’ll pick up a load before I start my deliveries.
If there is anything else with regards to P&H you need answering please feel free to ask.
Your main rookie mistake is taking a break - don’t you know this is food service and breaks are looked upon as optional!

When I was doing P&H I found brute force which I don’t have a lot of, normally got the straps moving eventually, well at least enough to unclip them, failing that a pair of scissors or a knife worked wonders.

Thank you everyone for your advise on the tachograph print out, I’ve written a note on the back of it explaining it as well as in my notebook.

I did notice that to some places the breaks seems to be optional.

Yeah I ended up getting it to a point I could unclip it from the side of the truck, then I swapped it for a nicer one once we started to look a lighter on the back.

Thank you, when I got to Avonmouth I was talking to one of the supervisors who gave me an application to fill out. So going to give that a shot as it seems to be a good place to build up your driving skills while be somewhat flexible about my uni course.
Breaks are optional haha.
Yes most people work through them but when I was at PH a few weeks back we had a memo stating we must take our breaks. We all know at PH you are rushed around like a headless chicken and you wanna make deliveries on time and get home earlier but sometimes in that job you need a break it’s not easy work.
As for your mistake if you’re at Coventry I know that will be sorted out for you and you’ll need to sign a form.
