Do not allow anybody to rush or pressurise you.
The main reason for this in your case, is you are new, so you MUST take your time about things, and concentrate until you are used to the type of truck and all the potential dangers around you.
If you succumb to pressure you will get flustered and ■■■■ WILL happen
However if you have a good guy running you he will know just that.
Do not be afraid to ask other drivers for advice and guidance, stuff like parking places, and leave plenty time to find a park, do not drive to 8.55 to look for somewhere.
We all have been where you are today. Most good type drivers will offer help in stuff like reversing until you get used to it.
Do not rely entirely on a sat nav, use some type of supplement, know your trailer heights and watch for low bridges.
Just keep cool mate, it WILL come.
Good luck with it.
As Robroy said take your time with everything get out and look as many times as you need don’t worry about people watching or what they think and ASK for help most drivers will help you out.
As for driving watch mirrors much as you can take as much room as you need both lanes if needed to stop cars down the side of you to stop you turning.
It’s your first day so don’t worry keep at it and it will come in time all been there thought the same as you
Jeff.
What Robroy said,
And it will get easier, it’s a big leap from doing your test, probably on a route you’ve been done many times with your instructor, to being let loose on your own.
I passed on a Thursday in a dinky wagon drag. Was in a LHD daf XF SSC on the saturday. Yes I bent the run under bar on the trailer 1st time out, and hit a post 2nd week. You learn as you go along. Relax!
Cheers guys appreciate it, take it one day at a time
In that example get a good understanding of cut in v tail sweep.IE is it the cut in that’s getting you or tail sweep. If it’s the former leave more room on the side you’re turning on the approach and/or start turning a bit later. If it’s the latter leave more room on the opposite side and/or start turning a bit sooner.
you said it in your post, Nearly clipped a post, well done for looking and obviously taking care to avoid the obstacle, I know an older experienced drive with scania unit with a 39tpm crane and only an empty 12m flat trailer who took out two entrances in a week, when asked why he did not use the 39ton per meter crane to just lift the trailer away from the gate he said well no ones going to do that are they. so £3grand down as the second one was an electric barrier and he drove over the out sensor with the front wheel of the scania on the way in.
so well done keep it up the industry needs you.
