Firms we have lost

ive been thinking about the firms we have lost since the beginning off the recession 2008, in west yorkshire we have lost…

macfarlanes twice

dews haulage

hiway express

bulmers at the wakefield europort

wincantons at the wakefield europort

winteringhams

all with big lay offs and that doesn’t take into account the firms that have had big lay offs but are still struggling on.

Teesside hasnt done bad (apart from the Bulmers debacle) the Asda and Tesco import hubs have helped, as well as the refiring of the Lackenby blast furnace. Once the deep sea terminal gets underway I suspect a few of the major container hauliers will come back (Maritime, Dart and a few others pulled out a few years ago), on top of that we have the offshore new wind turbine base that may come here which should bring in some heavy haulage work - its not that bleak here, however from a drivers point of view there are a lot looking for work so there is no shortage so its not going to be a goldmine as far as wages are concerned, here in the NE they are among the lowest in the country

Probably not helped by the “i dont do this and dont do that” attitude…

Despite being a quite heavily unionised area, demarkation has not been a real issue

Jd, it’s only the office that’s gone at Wakefield Europort. All the lads are still working.
They are run by the Liverpool office now

More recently in the sou ELITE, or some of it anyway!
Don’t forget MRS that were based all over with those ridiculously high fridge trailers!
Or even going back a few more years CITY Transport, that was one big operation!

Big question is who’s gonna be next? Quite a few this year in ,y honest humble opinion!

I forgot stobart took over irlams, closed down wakefield and leeds to consolidate in sherburn.

jd stobart took over irlams here - said that theyd keep all the drivers and trucks just change their colours and after the sale they promptly got shut of all the trucks and sacked the drivers – two of my mates worked for irlams — not good - stobbies need shutting down to let the real haulage firms back in to do the job properly…
