I used to get my fuel there, often around that time, when I was doing their transit work, early ‘70s that was. The old fella on the night shift then was a good ol’ boy, I only knew him as ‘Cod’ as that 's what Ray called him. Thinking about it, seem to have an idea in the back of my mind his name could have been Jim, but I could be completely wrong on that.
This old boy has just discovered Truck Net, these threads make compulsive reading, and boy do they stimulate the little “Grey Cells”! No one has yet mentioned Reg Coopers, Coopers Road Services of Moxley, remember their trunk from Quasi Arc at Bilston,(Spa Town of the Midlands) for Murex. What about the Hampton empire for The Patent Shaft at Wednesbury. A T Hartshornes operation for F H Lloyd, the double drive Atkinsons, long before he (with the late Stan Batchelor) took on the Volvo service agency under Jim McKelvies Ailsa Truck. Any one here participate in the owner driver scheme at Swaby and Mosses Brasway? with those 6x2 F86 Volvos. Or work inside that dark satanic building for E A Smith, with those old Atkinson 8wheelers on 40x8s that Wolverhamptons future multi World Champion cyclist Hugh Porter used to chase and overtake on the A449. What of Craddock Bros, 8LW 8x4 Atkinson, and their other old stuff! Brian Meridiths Fordhouse Transport, those beautiful red Big Js, Tony Holmes fleet, on for C B Smith at Neachells lane, anybody drive that Krupp cab Atkinson for Cartwright Transport on Willenhall Road long before Chris Kelly bought it out along with Thomas Ingles, (and their unused Guy Big J. Top Pops Crown Street, Neil Prendergasts purple Aston Martin, and Peak single tyred tandem rushing Carribean Pop up and down the country. And rembering the Carribean Woodrow Trenchs Buffalo with its glowing turbo on for Bison Concrete, long before his F88. Ive got work to do, should be Silage, but its wet, but plenty of other jobs, get thinking gentlemen, Bon Chance.
Hi Saviem,
I think most of the firms you refer to have had some mention or other on various threads, check out “Birmingham and Black country firms”. The one exception being Cartwright transport, I haven’t seen any pictures of them on here and they ran a huge fleet doing Europe and Middle east late 60’s early 70’s. The notorious Reg Cooper and E.A. (teddy) Smith have of course had a mention. I didn’t know Chris Kelly had a Krupp cab Atki, but I do remember the one at Cartwrights.
The unused Big j you refer to at Thomas Ingles was actually mothballed from new by Brian Meredith at Fordhouse transport, this Guy is doing classic lorry shows in the hands of Richard Stanier ?
I don’t know if the Batchelor family are still involed with Hartshornes, I went to colledge with Steve (Stan’s son?).
How about Bert Shelley from Wellington rd Bilston who had the immaculate green and red Fodens and Commer 2 strokes, I haven’t seen any photo’s of them ?

When I was at at Westerns in the 80’s, we used to sub and get a bit of work from Star Roadways (were they in Bilston?) also, Mckelvies had a yard in Tipton (my old boss Peter Bircham moved to Warrrington from there) plus some other old names spring to mind (probably been mentioned in other threads around here) Beck and Pollitzer, Harwin, WJ Daniel and there was a firm who ran fridges - think they were near junction 9 (who were they?)
Have Webbs from Bilston and Davis Brothers Smethwick had a mention, both places near enough to Walsall.

Yes I remember McKelvies having a yard in Tipton as did Andrew Wiseharts, was the fridge firm you were thinking about Barretts and Baird ?
Starr roadways (and their offshoot 20th century trans) were in Vulcan rd Bilston, they were taken over by Stillers, the old Starr roadways yard still remains. Beck and Pollitzer are still just round the corner from Starr.
Chris Webb:
Have Webbs from Bilston and Davis Brothers Smethwick had a mention, both places near enough to Walsall.
Webb bros. ran some immaculate AEC’s, mainly working from Bilston steelworks, they both packed up at the same time, as with many haulage yards their plot was taken over by new houses. I don’t know what happened to Davis bros,Rolfe street hire runs from their place ?

Don’t s’pose there’s a pic of it??
240 Gardner:
You wanted Marc’s pic of Hayward’s Scammell Handyman?
Does anyone know the bloke on the right in this pic! Is it max jakeman? Looks alot like him and he was working for haywards for a good many years
Saviem
I worked for Top Pops Crown St Wolves in 72 when i was 16.
I will always remember BIll the driver of the ERF Gardner180 came in to factory to ask me if i wanted to go to London the next day and it would be a night out
Would i. thought i had died and gone to heaven,he said be here at 6 in the morning with your suitcase i walked {well floated} from Lanesfield and was there for 5 to to be sure he did not go without me.
We went to Tilbury and was there for around 4 hours we had a night out on the A13 Four Oaks ? 60p for the bed , i think about 8/10 other drivers in the room,
I think we had three drops 20 palletts of pop on a flat rope & sheeted would be a curtainsider now ,
I will never forget it one of the highlights of my life. trouble is the family wish i would forget, sick of hearing it.
What do i do now general haulage on with a flat trailer,
