Im getting this a lot lately, driving at night, there are slip road closures with no prior warning.
Not long back came out of Thatcham, all the way up the A34, with enough time to get to cherwell for a break. Passed plenty laybys with spaces but thought i’d rather get as far as the services.
Get to the top of the said A34 to hop onto M40 and the slip road is closed. Not one sign all the way up the 34.
Same last night, came out of wonderful cce at Sidcup, just nuff time to make Thurrock for break, and lo and behold, when i get to the M25 slip, its shut. No prior warning, just the 800 yard signs for roadworks.
So its a diversion down to J2 and back again, around 20 miles in all.
luckily i made it to thurrock within my time, but what if i hadnt?
With Mr Vosa man sat by the tunnel, how would i stand if i had run over my time and he wanted a friendly chat?
And how can the Highways agency get away with closing major junctions with no prior warning?
Bit of a rant i know, apologies, but it gets frustrating.
Can you imagine them doing it during the day so all those poor decent people in the cars were inconvenienced?
It’s not always the HA. A lot of the time these closures are carried out by private contractors and they’ll just close the road without informing the highways agency.

i know exactly what you mean i had loaded at didcot for coventry i had come down the a43 no signs there got onto the a34 heading for didcot no signs there either until on way back from didcot about 1 mile from m40 jnc saying the road was shut and had to follow diversion which took me south down to next jnc and then back north what a load of (zb) that was…
This happens regularly on the a38, m1 & a1m. Just as frustrating for me is when it’s the other way round. All the way back from Lichfield signs saying a1m closed past a61, so you start to work out the route for the double decker but lo & behold, a19 closed beyond the a66. So I say sod it I will follow the diversion, on arrival no closure. 3 nights last week. Surely it cannot be too hard to turn the signs off when the work has finished.
