Fined extra for blaming satnav. justified?

two drivers fined for crossing a bridge with a weight limit on the same day.
1st driver blamed the satnav, fine £235.
2nd driver blamed himself, fine £170

Sounds fair enough, if you put your hands up and confess you were in the wrong, jobs a goodun. Blame someone / something else for your ■■■■■■■ expect to get reamed.

Should be double…more if a car sat nav was used :grimacing:

So if they are using a sat nav that doesn’t have hgv restrictions on it they should be fined more than if they were using a hgv specific sat nav. That would suggest being more lenient for having disobeyed two instructions than for disobeying one!

Doesn’t matter whether they were using a sat nav or not they got caught and the fines are appropriate.

You can’t blame the Satnav, it’s down to you as a driver to make the final call. I always second guess my Satnav until I find otherwise. That being said, I’ve gone over weight limited bridges before, never been over the actual weight but I’d still get done if I was stopped. There’s one in Croydon centre that is 18t MGW, been over that a few times but only when empty so I’ll be weighting less than the limit but I drive a 26t lorry so…

You sir are a maniac and the sooner you’re looked up and the key is thrown away the better. Hanging is too good

+1. Denying responsibility for your own actions will always go badly for you

I would have thought the fines reflect each individuals financial status.
When you go to court you have to fill in a form explaining your income/expenditure.

Although I could be wrong as I didn’t even look at the link above.

Absolute ■■■■■■■■!
Wtf for? :unamused: I use a car sat nav, doubled up with a bit of common sense, it works for me fine, and many more drivers like me. :bulb:
If I make a balls up, it is down to ME…no arguments.
Some of us do not need to spend in excess of 3 to 400 quid to buy something that does everything except wipe your arse…and the ones that do still ■■■■ up :unamused:
. If I needed that level of guidance to do the job I wouldn’t ■■■■■■ do it. :unamused:

Oh and the answer to the thread title is a resounding YES!
The driver is responsible for letting a gadget TELL him what to do instead of ADVISE him what to do.

Funnily enough I agree with you. I’ve been down 7.5t limits (not bridges) for residential areas, but when you’re doing home delivery, what choice do you have?

If your doing residential deliveries, and even some industrial premises, if they are in a weight restricted area, usually, unless there is a weight sensitive structure(bridge), they will be restricted except for loading, this would be the reason that you are there, so nothing to report driver

Ps Luke is being tongue in cheek

Assuming the bridge weight limit was well signposted, getting a bigger fine for blaming his sat-nav seems fair to me.

I just had a look at the link, I wonder if it had something to do with the trucks registered gross weights.

Ainsley, 57. was photographed by a trading standards officer driving his lorry, which had a maximum weight of 28 tonnes across the bridge at 11.09am on September 24 last year,

"Miss Airton told the court Blokland had been photographed at 10.37am driving over the bridge in his lorry which had a maximum weight of 26 tonnes.

Not only did Ainsley blame the Sat Nav, he also blamed his employer :unamused:

Ainsley said he had joined a new company in August, who should have informed him about the weight limit.

Me thinks someone is not a proper driver, but a steering wheel attendant :unamused:

Whatever, it was more expensive than shown at first glance

She handed him a £235 fine and also ordered him to pay £142.75 costs and a £24 surcharge.

The other driver was stung quite well too

Blokland was fined £170 and also ordered him to pay £142.75 costs and a £20 surcharge

A162 Tadcaster Road Bridge at Burton Salmon, near Sherburn-in-Elmet
“That bridge seems to be a massive problem for the council. Even today there was an officer taking photos.”

So if your in this area, though obviously none of the angels on Trucknet would do such a thing, just be ware

I apologise for my light hearted comment.

Thats hilarious, expecting your employer to tell you about road restrictions…Whats next, a booklet with all STOP signs location in the council

Weight restriction warnings at both end of the road…and places to turn around so what is being stated is absolute bull crap

If you’re looking down at the satnav - you might well miss seeing that otherwise obvious 7.5t warning sign…

There might even come a time when “Looking at the satnav” is treated the same as “texting” in the distraction it brings from decent driving…

That would kinda make the whole daft idea of Satnavs obsolete wouldn’t it?

What do we have them for anyways? What makes them better than a couple of printouts from Google Earth before you set off on your journey, clearly into the unknown?

On the other hand, - how do you explain to the no speke English brigade - where you want this load taken for £8ph… :unamused:

Would this be blamed on the Sat-Nav I wonder?
