Finding companies that run trucks/vans?

I am currently doing a few days multi-drop in a 7.5t for my mates. He doesnt have anymore work going at the moment. I have signed up to 3 agencies- most wouldnt touch me due to only having held my licence a 7 months. I havent heard from any of the agencies I have signed up for, offering me wor, though I only signed up this week.

I see people on here saying that they just chanced it and chapped on the doors of companies for a start- how did you know what companies to try? Someone told me that tipper companies require people at weekends, nights when the driver’s have used up all their hours- is this true? are they a likely place for some additional work? How do you locate them?

One way to target companies is to use the VOSA operators Licence search facility. I did this when I first started contacting people - it gives you ideas that you might not always have thought of, for example exhibition companies who run the odd truck or two and need drivers. If you use the Yellow Pages or somesuch you might only go for the haulage companies.

The search is at https://www.tan.gov.uk/tanen/vosa_anonymousoperatorsearch_new.asp, and lets you search by town etc, so you can draw up a list and target a specific area, and you’ve got a better idea of what size outfit you’re looking at.

Hope this helps
