Finally looking up

Hi all after passing Cat C at the end of jan i decided to follow everyones advice on here and send CV’s etc. off to transport companies and apply for several jobs advertised around the south yorkshire area. I also signed up to several agencies seeing as they sounded willing to take on newbies. Having heard nothing from agencies and any of the companies I was just about ready to give up hope and go straight for C+E to try get my foot on the ladder although not sure if that would pay off due to me only being 23. Anyway this week I had a phone call off a distribution company in Sheffield asking me to go in for an assessment drive and a quick interview, drove better than I have driven a truck before and the interview went well, waiting to hear back from them today… I’m positive there will be someone more qualified than me that gets the job but at least it has given me hope that i will actually find some work

That fantastic, don’t give up hope, my Grandson came out of Uni at 21 and couldn’t get a job, so I put him through his cat C, then sent him out to knock on doors two weeks and over 100 doors but he landed a job at 30grand a year, so it’s there if you keep knocking

All the best Rick

Cheers Rick, it’s great to hear about these sort of things. Unfortunately I received an e-mail this afternoon saying somebody with more experience got the job but im glad I had the experience of driving a truck thats foreign to me and also prepared me for future interviews as I couldn’t really predict what they were going to ask. I also spoke to an agency today and though they have no class 2 work she said if I got c1 with my cat C trainer they would have no problem in getting me straight on to class 1 work. It’s left me wondering what to do now as I was eventually going to do C+E anyway I think i may just go for it as i’m sure it can’t do me any harm!

£30k on Class 2 as a new driver?! :open_mouth:

Which door do I go knock on?

Hello sw20,
As a newly qualified driver I would definitely say go for class 1. I’ve been really lucky in getting a decent job. As “the new boy” I’ve been driving rigids and artics to cover for holiday, sickness etc and it’s made me sort of handier to have on the books…
If you have the cash, do it as soon as possible mate!!! The old question of “how long have you held your class 1” comes up pretty often, so the sooner you do it the better.
All the very best with it,
Nige.

My reasoning for going straight for Class 1 is that my Cat C training will still be fresh in my mind, and once I have it in the bag it will give me even more doors to knock on

Try being 18 and not even having your Car license for a year or thereabouts and going out looking for Class 1 jobs haha… that was tough

Good luck.

Cheers for the advice guys, booked on for an assessment on an artic tomorrow so hopefully i’ll be booking in a test soon…
